Small special build question

Post by earthquakeengineering »

So I've got a friend who wants me to build something like a Morgan SW22 or Dumble SSS, but still at 22watts.
As far as I can tell, the Small specials out there now run 6L6's? As far as I understand, it wouldn't take much to make this run 6V6's for ~22watts, correct? So I can follow pretty much the existing schematics for the Small Special, and just put in 6V6's, while making sure that I drop the B+ below 450 or so?

I earnestly tried to find info on this on the previous SS threads, but came up dry.

Thanks for the help!

Hmmm, the Small Special and the SSS are very different amps.

Also, a duet of JJ 6V6 can run at 450V B+ without issues.

Right on with what I was thinking... I know JJ's can take the 450+, but if I was wanting to throw some NOS bottles in it, I would hesitate to throw that much at them. JJ 6V6's sound too close to 6L6's to me...
He's talking like he wants more SW22 stuff.
What OT/PT are good for this? Since I'll be using 6V6's, do I need to change out the OT from the existing versions of the Sm. Special, or will they handle the load mismatch well enough? I love Classictone iron for all my builds.
Thanks

I would use Magnetic Components Deluxe 6V6 transformer set or similar brand set. Or Mojotone Heyboer Deluxe set one PT has lower HT so you could run the lower HT with those NOS or old 6v6's.

In my Dumble Tweedle Deluxe I'm using MC Tweed Deluxe transformers with old 6v6 pulls.

Not 100% sure but I thought that the SW22 comes with 6V6 tubes, there's no spec on the website but I'm sure I read that some where.
