Princeton Chassis Progress pics 12-4-2013 - back to it
The planning thread got to 3 pages so I'm starting this one for progress.
11-26-13 - Preamp tube sockets wired, all boards installed, some control wiring done.
The rectifier and bias board is on the side, relay supply near the relays. I'll still need to wire these, add the main filter can, populate the relay boards and complete the power amp and power supply.

This is what I like to think of as a honeymoon fit, real tight.
I'm still trying to find a way to fit a loop in here too. I'm thinking an ironsounds loop mounted in a cap pan under the chassis.
In reality I don't think that will work, just not enough real estate. I'm actually not a big fan of the way a dumbleator colors the tone, I like the way my amps sound. Maybe I'll put the ironsounds loop into an external chassis.

Re: my PR II conversion
Only mine isn't a gut job, I bought the chassis and fabricated the boards.groovtubin wrote:Probably shoulda gutted n rebuilt like you did Bob, dang i must be nuts! lol!Bob-I wrote:This is what I like to think of as a honeymoon fit, real tight.

I've tried modding like that, it really makes more since to gut and start over.

Bob, have you considered the Zero Loss FX Loop from Metro Amp?

I haven't seen that one before. I'll have to look into that. I'd really like to run the reverb and external delay in the loop. With the ironsounds I can run it from a 30V PS so I could run it externally easily, metro is run from higher voltages so it would have to fit inside.Structo wrote:Bob, have you considered the Zero Loss FX Loop from Metro Amp?

Ha, honeymoon fit...
Bob what are you shooting for 6v6 plate voltage?

The PT I'm using has 2 HV taps. It will give me either 350 or 400. I'll experiment with both but I expect that the 400 will work best.
I'm debating on the primary filters now. I have. 50/50 500V can that I'm using. The question is to use 50 or 100uF. With 6Vs 100uF may be a bit much.

50 50 Can
I use the 50 50 can. 50 on the plates and 50 on the screens. Can be a little stiff if you run too much negative feedback. You may also wish to explore the lower plate voltage and draw 75 - 80% of plate dissipation at idle. The more current you can draw the better the feel, IMHO.
The other thing is 6V6s will be darker at 350V so you may have to monkey with the presence and bright caps to liven things up. The cap across the 220k resistor at the grid of V1B may be a good place to start.
I'm finishing a push pull build in the Allen Champ chassis with a Blues Deluxe power transformer. Expecting 320V at the plates. Going to see if I can get by with 100 ohm screen resistors. Will undoubtedly be looking for more response in the 3-5K portion of the spectrum.

I've found too much filter on the screen makes it feel tight. I have a totem pole 47/47uF and 470k/470k for screens as well as the 3 nodes for PI/V2/V1 and an additional node off the screens for reverb driver.
Thx for the info, I will be experimenting with a few things once I get this running.

Bob,
I would personally use 100uF on plates, and 16-20uF on the screens of those 6V6 tubes. I like how that feels and sounds.

Bob,
Looks like you have the 220/150k plate resistors on V2 the wrong way round?
