High plate vs Low plate: Which is better for cleans?

Post by caphead »

I know this is a totally subjective question dependent on many variables and differing opinions. To be honest, the Dumble overdrive sound is generally not my thing, (though in the hands of a capable player it is a thing of beauty) as I prefer higher gain circuits. But the cleans I've heard from Dumble style circuits are simply stunning and I'd like to incorporate some of these concepts in my next build. I've been lurking around here for a while and I have learned alot in regards to some of the different circuit types over the generations and the specific terminologies, so I'm not a complete virgin to all this. The context I and most of the people I do work for play guitars with higher output humbuckers through 4x12 cabinets, so using those parameters, which type of circuit in your opinions would work better for this?
I've included a poll just for fun.... Thank you all for your time

Having tried both low plate and high plate versions, I prefer the high plate skyliner amp.

I think it is better with humbuckers.

But as for single coil Strat type guitars, the low plate may be friendlier.

Thats kinda what I've gathered from watching numerous videos of different D-style amps and the well documented Dumble amps. In fact my opinion has somewhat changed as to the overdrive sounds a Dumble is capable of as well, I guess I never knew how versatile this type of circuit could be; I am giving some thought on building one in it's complete form in the near future.... But anyways, thank you Structo for your insight, your opinion on this is as one of an expert as far as I am concerned. And thanks to all you who voted. It seems that low plate won, so I shall take that into consideration as well.

Versatile is the key word.

With a good ODS amp, you can cover a lot of ground.
Don't pay any attention to the man behind the curtain.

You can turn up the gain, you can achieve some tones that are not classic Dumble.

There are several members here that play in cover bands that say their ODS amp covers the ground necessary for the tones of the song.

My take is, since I am past most of the gigging years is that the high plate, Skyliner amp is probable the best gigging amp there is, unless your set list is mostly high gain Marshall tones.
But then again, the Dumble Bluesmaster should cover all those too.
