ODS Style Preamp into any power amp?

Post by RJ Guitars »

Hello All,

Has anyone experimented with an ODS style preamp into a HiFi power amp?

If indeed the ODS tone is all in the preamp and that signal is delivered to a high quality power amp, is it reasonable to make a preamp and run it into any quality power amp and expect ODS tone?

More specifically, does the Phase inverter add an additional gain stage that would be lost if I tapped the signal in front of it. If so, could I simply add one more gain stage to a preamp circuit and take that to a power amp and preserve the ODS sound?

If this would work, could I not also use this as the preamp into a high quality single ended power amp and expect an ODS flavor to the tone?

i`m SURE it would sound GOOD! I have a client who shoves a REALLY good TS-10 into a Grommes power amp( Class A w/6550`s) BUT it`s NOT the D thing, altho really good.. The DRIVER section of these amps IS a MAJOR part of THE sound, i don`t think many here will disagree w/that..:)

Thanks Groovtubin... For me it's worth exploring.

I understand that most folks like to leave the Dumble power section alone because you can get great tone at lower volumes. I'm after that same great low volume tone but I'm curious if you can get there with less iron... If my idea works out, you could make a good amp using the Dumble preamp and a decent quality powered speaker... and just add more power amp for the bigger gigs.

I also have to admit if I ever succeeded at a Dumble sounding amp with a SE power section then I could make a lightweight combo amp that would allow me to carry my guitar in one hand and the amp in the other and not need a back adjustment later... One guitar, one cord, and no pedal board - that's the ultimate gig setup for me

I started a SE schematic and next I'll make a chassis layout. If anyone would like to critique it I'd welcome that.

thanks again
