another '102'

Post by jelle »

Hi,

I have completed a 102....well sort of. It has a 102 preamp with a precision powersupply. Internal tube buffered loop. I borrowed an 335 style guitar and this combination just kills! The goop is to prevent people from messing with a good sounding amp. But in case anyone is curious, this one is a straight 102 preamp :D

Thanks Iracer and Sliberty for pointing me to a source for the brown board material, much appreciated!

Jelle

Nice looking build except for that blue mess. :P For the life of me and in spite of the reasons given, I just can't figure out why...

Some people think HAD's goop is driven by performance / reliability moreso than secrecy. I'm not one of them. :-)

Thanks for the nice comment! As for HAD's use of the goop: I would not know his exact reasons either, I think we will have to ask him if we want an answer on that question.

Probably part of the "crystal lattice"! :D

As usual for you Jelle, nice work.

Do enjoy it, the tone or the $, whichever you choose! :)

Cheers!

If Dr.D was using goop as a fastner, the amps which were gooped could withstand operation during a 10 richter scale earthquake with that amount of goop-age.. A minimal amount of that RTV/Silicone goes a long way as many of us know.

As for protection, I think its pretty common knowledge that a multitude of methods exists to remove the goop, heat, cold, solvents, even if the parts are destoryed in the degooping , as long as you can read the values and solder in replacements theres no loss (within reason of what part it is..) With that being said I never understood the goop as a protective measure. If you really don't want anyone inside your amp then weld a hardend 1/4" stainless plate to the top off the chassis and force the user to literally destory the amp to get inside it.. Or rig it with a claymore or something (sarcasm!)

As an isolator the goop would be good to a point. If your build had any issues with microphonics the blob could be a problem. As far as servicing, good lord WHY!!!!!!! I personally dispise dealing with gooped stuff, had to degoop a few pedals last year to fix them and it took 2-3 hours to get black marine epoxy off the pcb's to then have to rebuild 1/2 the unit..

Great build Jelle, these photos are more inspiration for the driving force of 3am building sessions :)
