dumbleator vs SS effects loop

Post by Ang3lus »

hey all

i'm trying to understand if there's a real TONAL difference between the dumbleator and a device like the kleinulator or minimix.

I do not know how they sound like at all nor do i have the ability to try any of these devices, but i'm about to pull the trigger on a dumbleator build (that i will be building) and want to know if i can save a bundle by building the SS version of it

Hi there,

Klein vs Dumbleator
Yes, Having build both a Klein and several dumbleators, I would say yes, there is a tonal difference between a Dumbleator and a Klein. The tonal difference is due to the compression that is created in the "return" section (the second part of the dumbleator tube). The Driver section (the first part of the valve doesnt add much to the tone. Another aspect regarding the Klein is that although it might be ok for bedroom playing, it doesnt quite like the higher levels you need for gigging.

Cables
The cables to/from the dumbleator, are also an important part of the sound. Go for something like 180p-200p capacitance per cable and put a 15p-68p capacitor on the amps master volume. The total impact of this is and added mid focus in your tone.

Minimix
The Minimix II is a different animal. I use it (together with either a Klein or dumbleator) in order to compensate for poor analog-to-digital conversion of modest effects machines (like e.g. Boss SE50 or SE70). Usually their Effects signal is OK, but the internal mixing is done digital and it ruins signal quality.
Using the Minimix, you can run the effects 100% wet and adjust effects level on the effects master volume.

Quality machines like the Intellifex or TC2290 on the other hand, don't need a Minimix II, since they perform the internal mixing through ICs and not through cheap analog-to-digital conversion.
Diva or not? - Respect for Mr. D's work....)
