Relay help (183 build)

Post by jlatrace »

I'm really stumped and need some help. My 183 is up and running and the voltages all check out great. However, I can't get either relay (PAB or OD) to work. I am getting good voltage readings and I must be missing something. Can you guys looks at my pictures and give me some direction?

I'm thinking the polarity of the relay coils are different from the Omron. Thus, the diode, B+ and ground wiring as configured is backwards and needs to be transposed. Are those orange relays by chance the Panasonic brand?

Yes the relays are Panasonic and I think you are exactly right about the polarity but I'll check the data sheet before i switch them around.

TM,
I checked the data sheet and you are correct (I knew that, but forgot & also I should have checked before I installed the relays).
Thank you very much!

YW Les, now since you have installed sockets for the relays, I would just pull the Panasonic's and just drop in the Omron relays. The nominal cost would well outweigh having to rewire and reroute the relay system.

Aren't those relays plugged in backwards?

I have made several amazingly stupid mistakes on this amp like trying to troubleshoot low voltages caused by my current limiter; installing a defective tube socket; wiring speaker hot lead wrong; wiring relay polarity wrong. So yes it looks backwards.

Thanks for the catch.

What's so funny is that I had it right, then, after setting the project aside for a month, " corrected" (created the error) the polarity. Anyway, there is plenty of lead to swap the wires and it looks like I plugged them in backwards.

I believe you are going to have to transpose the diodes as well.Personally; I would pay the $11 bucks, exchanging the relays, making this fix a 2 min job verses having to unterminate everything, pulling the boards and reinstalling them.

I bought Omron relays for my build. The diode and supply was backwards from other used relays, in these amps. At least if I need to replace one, got it at RS... easy to find.

Thanks for the advice Mike. I have on hand two NTE 5/6 volt relays. I need to check their polarity, but I think they are a drop in fix. By the way the Panasonic's were NOT backwards, so that's one less mistake than I thought earlier.

Sorry if I lead you astray.

I was not familiar with those yellow relays/

Glad you got it fixed.

Tom
No your posts are always helpful. It was something I noticed when pulling the Panasonic relays and replacing them with NTE R 40s.
Thanks for your help.
