Overdrive Special Reverb........#60

Post by dreric »

Hey Guys

Once the dust started to settle from all in the information posted on the SSS over the past few weeks Mr. Gil Ayan knocks our collective socks off today with the details on the Borderline Special. (Thanks again Gil!)

Consequently, I have been reflecting on how much this group means to me and how much I've learned here. In the SSS thread Leftystrat made a comment about how the community had worked more bugs out of the schematic in a few days than others had in months. I thinks he's right and IMO, we are better as a group than we are as hoarders of knowledge derived from examination of HAD's work. I wanted to offer what I could in gratitude for this community.

A few months back Premier Guitar did an article on another elusive Dumble amp. The Overdrive Special Reverb #60. Here's a link to this amps and some history on it's pedigree:

http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/I ... 100WR.aspx

I tracked down the tech who supplied the technical info for the article, he is local to me, and spent a few hours with him talking amps. You'll see that his name is Chris Barnett. He's an "off the grid" kind of guy. No webpage and he checks is email about once a month. The following layout / schematic notes and photos were taken by him in 1999 and I have his permission to post them here. He's not keen on getting bunch of correspondence on this subject so I'd ask that we be respectful of his time should others wish to contact him.

You'll note that the reverb section of the amp is missing. The reason for this is that everyone who heard the amp says that the reverb its weak link. Chris said "I didn't draw it out because I knew that I could do better". Please do not contact him asking about the reverb info, it's not there. (BTW he has a twin conversion at his shop that sounds glorious.) Most who have heard #60 sing it's praises.

Here's a thread from someone who's dabble with the circuit.

https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=16736

#60 has unusual plate resistors, additional masters for clean and dirty. I'm thinking that we could work up a decent reverb circuit. I've been talking with Rj about making up some 26" chassis as I estimate the boards to be 14" long.

I'm talking way to much............................. here's what I have.

With deep gratitude

Eric

PS:

Rob...... yes and thank you for your service in maintaining the photo page

Nik...... if you make a clone or kit from this info please grant the community respect by sharing your layout. I have found Ceritone layouts to be a valuable cross reference. IMO, kinda makes up for the take no give thing.

If there are more recent photos, feel free to contribute to the thread.

What's next .................... more SSS? Dumbleland? Giving back feels cool.

Here

http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/I ... ecial.aspx

you'll find 5 clips of this ODR #0060 and an ODS (at the end of this article). The first two clips demonstrate the sound of ODR #0060 with and without its reverb section:

"Clip 1: Dumble OD-100WR, clean blues riffs without reverb then with Reverb on, using Tom Anderson Classic.

Clip 2: Dumble OD-100WR, dirty blues riffs without reverb then with reverb on, using Tom Anderson Classic"

So everyone here can perhaps get at least some kind of personal impression concerning the sound of the reverb section of ODR #060.

AFAIK the opinion of Alexander Dumble is that "it's all in the ratios".

BTW: the pictures posted by dreric show a green "deep" switch and the pictures posted here http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/I ... 100WR.aspx show a red "deep" switch.

Cheers,

Max

As always thanks for your historical knowledge. The pictures i posted are from 1999. If you look at scan #9 you'll see that all the mini toggles are green. The picture in premier guitar are from a later photo shoot and it shows the center toggle as red. Perhaps the tips were changed at that time.

I heard that they were asking 65K in Chicago, can you verify?

Eric, sorry, I didn't express myself well enough: I wouldn't point out that the colors of the tips are different (what's indeed the case, too, as you point out) but that the colors of the switches inside the amp are different.

Cheers,

Just to clarify to those who don't know, #60 has Post Overdrive Reverb (not the mucked up sounding Pre-OD Reverb that some of the earlier amps had). Just my 2 cents.

thanks for the Pics!

This amp currently belongs to a gentlemen named Bruce. I have respectfully kept these out the public domain to honor my word to him but I guess the cat is out of the bag now.

It is a shame he did not document the reverb as it is the unique bit about the amp and I ca attest to the fact that post OD and Loop Reverb sounds silky sweet! :O)
Too bad Dumble did not stick to it as when done right it kills the pre od circuit imo.

Anyway I'll have to ask Bruce what he thinks of this now that it is out. Maybe he will give his blessing on releasing the other pictures I have and pics and details of his other amps... If he says it's cool I'll put them up...If not I am keeping my word regarding them.

Nice to see some information flowing around here again tho. ;O)

Shad
Personally I've heard both sides as well some say it sounds wonderful others not so much.. So did you actually hear the reverb on this amp or just going by what others have said..If so did you find it rather difficult to get the reverb dialed in and also did the mix balance out going from both clean and OD once you found the sweet spot..

Thanks

Tony

Example given:

Lowell George playing the killed pre od reverb cicuit of his ODRS 100W  :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yyhTLNSmPI

All the other Lowell George recordings after he got his pre od reverb ODRS 100W are of course examples for the tone of this pre od reverb circuit, too.

Have fun!
