Toward the end, he says HAD just rebuilt a Vibroverb for him, and is working on a 59 Bassman. Would be interesting to hear (and see) what gets done to them. Anybody know KWS' tech?

KWS seems like a nice guy, but that was tough to sit through. The Dumble didn't wow me in the slightest.

I don't the sound was clear enough to hear the amp properly, besides, I think I'd have to play the amp to see if I liked the "feel" of it.

Different strokes etc.
Yours Sincerely

Well you`re just one tuff cookie fellow! Unless you got your amp sustaining like that, i guess you definitely wouldn`t know what it feels like! I DO!!

Cool interview.
I like KWS.

Down to earth guy.

So he is having HAD build him a couple amps.

I wonder if HAD still builds any ODS amps?

Hi Jim

I'm a big believer in quantifying things. We never get to hear what KWS sound is like without the Dumble modded amp, so the true effect of the HAD amp with the two Fender amps is unknown to us.

KWS doesn't say the amp adds sustain, he said it stops the overdrive and distortion pedal from sounding harsh, so sustain isn't the issue according to KWS. Bear in mind if your running a distortion pedal into a tube screamer, sustain isn't going to be issue.

As far as my Bluesmaster clone goes, a couple of forum members have heard it and given it the thumbs up, and it does sustain like KWS rig. :D

I guess I lucked out with that build.

I should point out that I'm not sure I want my amp to sound too smooth either.

Way back in 1982 KWS attended one of my shows, after the first set he wanted a run down on my gear,
Nice kid, Kenny invited me to set down at his table with him and his hot mom she was stunning,
I’m glad to see he is doing well.

Not to be harsh, or mean..minded Mark....In building a TRUE dumble clone NO such thing as luck, and there is NO "quantifying" ""LUCK"" , you either KNOW what the H*** you are doing or you don`t. Don`t think Brandon would call it luck either, having been IN so many nice dumbles do you?????? Was afforded THE opportunity to get inside a dumble once. The steelbender.com, and youtube video of it by ampheaven ( mines awfully close w/mid boost on) That Dumble is owned by Dr Billy in Greensboro NC. and was used by the black crowes for one of their albums. I sold most of my xtra Diaz pedals to him when i was building for that co back in 2004/2005. Never took him up on it, and 2B honest glad i didn`t... Hard work, and reading HIFI dsign, and listening to a higher power got me there. It`s def not THAT smooth, but w/PAB AND MID boost yeah it does it rather NICELY..i also t crunches nicely w/tele NO pab or mid.... Again, just no such thing as luck in these builds, if that were so, everyone inc Obama could build one become rich and famous in there own minds, and believe they are the very incarnation of Howard himself, which i find totally disgusting......... One NICE thing @ the 80`s smooth musicians, they could def afford anything they want, won more grammy`s, had all the girls, and were on tv more than most here at the ampgarage! And i personally enjoyed listening to it..

I really Like Australia ,visited in 1981 via courtesy of USS America a Naval vessel.. Stll remember a young stunning woman named Jennifer K Gratton, 227 Ewen st Perth Woodlands Australia 6019...yep, she made quite an impression on me!

Have fun Mark, jim

Hi Jim

That is a very broad reply. I went to Perth in the early eighties myself, a friend was living there. I remember him telling me girls he'd never seen before seemed to materialise, never underestimate the appeal of a man in uniform.

By quantifying I mean how much effect does the HAD amp make to KWS total sound. If it simply overshadowed the other two amps he wouldn't have them present, so logically it only makes up a certain percentage of his total timbre.

I like to quantify aspects of my builds and question what is making a difference and have a reference point to compare it to. I think everyone quantifies their build, after all changing one brand of resistor isn't going to effect the sound of the amp as much as changing speakers or output tube type.

I find most peoples tonal memory is pretty short and the time taken to solder in a new or different component is enough time for them to forget what the amp sounded like.

As far as getting lucky with my build, well people do have problems with their builds, but Tony Albany and Co have put a heck of a lot of info into those drawings. There isn't much R&D left as Tony and Co have done such an excellent job. The intermediate builder should be able to assemble one of the these amps. Mind you they a complicated build.

As far as my build went, I read and interpreted the info and used the skills I'd learn't on the web and through experience and luck does exist.
Yours Sincerely

Mark Abbott
