I'm checking out Fleebay and a few other sources for EVM-12Ls to go with my 50W ODS (TL806 cab). I had it in mind that the Classic 16 Ohm was the way to go, but I wanted to get some feedback on the 12L series and verify I was on a good road. I figure they're all good, but I hate to settle!!!
There's the Classic and the ZW/BLS 12L both in 16 Ohm. Is 16 Ohm the "smoother" speaker, rather than the 8 Ohm? Anybody "A/B'd" these two to know of any difference?
I'm finding them from $120 - $250. I know the list is usually about $230, so the $150-$200 range sounds like a pretty good deal. Hey, I want the best at the lowest price! Yeah, I'm like that...
Thanks for any feedback!!!
Kevin

I currently have a ZW black label EV, how do those compare to a classic EV?

Re: EVM-12L Choices ???
I've got an EVM12L in a Thiele cab. Great reference speaker. Very loud but not opinionated. I've had better luck with the big, cast-frame speakers than I have with British 12's for D-sounds. YMMV
One small issue, those 806 cabs aren't very wide. Unless you have two of them, the head sits awkwardly -- and then you have your loop and any rack effects perched on top of that. Think in advance how you are going to keep it harmonica-player proof.

Re: EVM-12L Choices ???
Thanks for the heads up on the Thiele... My plan was to make the cabinet to match the width of the head and use an internal baffle to keep the volume of the acoustical chamber the same. I want to use the extra space as storage for the speaker cable and the microphone cable.
That was how I plan to keep it safe from the harmonica player, the keyboard player who constantly has to trace out cabling because he doesn't REALLY know how to connect his gear, the lead singer who happens to moonlight as a village idiot, the drummer who is a Keith Moon fan, and myself...
The rest of the plan for the cab includes a fixed-mounted Sennheiser e609 (behind the grill cloth) so as to CONSISTENTLY get the sound I want. I added about 4" to the front of the cab (keeping the chamber the same) so as to have room to mount the mic.

You can always set the 806 on it's side, it doesn't affect the sound one bit.

Re: EVM-12L Choices ???
I picked up a pair on Craigslist this summer for $75 each and another for $100 in a crappy 1x12 cab which I tossed. They come around sometimes but you have to jump on them really quick! At one point I still had all three and one was a red label with the big back fin cover but didn't sound any different from the other type with the standard label. I think they were all Series II.
