Ultraphonix modded Deluxe -scratch build - good plan or not?

Post by rogb »

I really feel like putting together an Ultraphonix modded Deluxe 5E3, something just slightly bigger than the 86 Special with that amazing UP bloom and harmonics, 12" combo cab with an Eminence neo speaker, really like the 10" one I have..

Any thoughts, ideas or "chiming in" is always welcome!

The hard part is digging out the UP mods, I've looked at some of the Fender boost mods that are around.

Things will of course be tweaked up with tonestack lift and mid boost etc, just to add some variety.

If I were to do a Deluxe it would have to be the Deluxe Reverb, that one that was on YouTube was yummy. :D

Those schematics floating around have nothing to do with the UP mod though.

Thanks John, I thought not but they may be nearer to the mythical La Tostada mod... :D Unless you you know different. Any thoughts on the UP, though?

Rogb, without a circuit I don't know how you can build the UP amp.

If you know the controls/features of the amp and how it sounds you have a starting point.

If not start experimenting, who knows you might even build a better amp?
Yours Sincerely

Mark, there are folks out there with a circuit, that's for sure, but I think they don't want to be labelled as a "disgusting lot"

After seeing that supposedly genuine label, it makes me want to build a UP even more :D

no two are really the same. So you are basically chasing a moving target much like his amps. All I can say is those Fender Humble tweaks really have nothing to do with it.

Well John, your original lengthy and interesting post has been slimmed down somewhat, edited repeatedly (as is your right, of course) into a paragraph that kind of says little, but also a lot at the same time.

While I absolutely respect you and your achievements, you are truly a legend in my eyes, ultimately this forum is for those that wish to unravel the mysteries of the tube amp, and, especially in this subsection, the circuitry that your friend HAD employed.

Let's face it, some on here have commercialized these circuits, but I doubt anyone is getting rich doing it, if they do, well the numbers of sales are, in the scheme of things, minute.

Others, like me, would never, in a million years, be one of HAD's customers, either not cool enough or good enough, or, in my case, definitely not rich enough :D And if I was, I would never, ever, be party to the type of contract he inflicts on his customers. To paraphrase, "don't phone me or interrupt me, or I will bill your ass for it" LOL

The fact is that the circuits are out there, and we here like to build 'em, and in building them we learn and grow and adapt them to our own needs.

Like I have said in other threads, one thing I personally don't like is a tease, YMMV, if a member on here wants information, then, "put up or shut up", if I can term this crudely, but this not not meant in a rude way, to me, this applies to all, the greats of amp building and the novice alike.

The Amp Garage is an information exchange, the home of pirates and the "disgusting" of this world, long may it continue me hearties, now hoist that Jolly Roger and set sail for Dumbleland

Sorry I really didn't mean to be a tease.
I considered saying nothing and knew that some of what I said would drift to automatic notification so people could read it but didn't want it to be on permanent record. My problem is I share many of the same clients and don't want to get involved in a shit storm but thought I could also hint what ISNT going on to stop anyone from wasting their time chasing a ghost.

I thought I was contributing more than nothing and thought it might help.
And for the record the guy probably hates me right now anyway, last time I talked to him he wasnt pleased with me

No worries John.

I've heard before that it doesn't take much to tick off the big guy anyway so.....

If I were to take a guess at the Fender mods, I would basically just use the normal Fender clean stage then cascade the OD section like the ODS amps have.
I'm sure with some judicious tweaking you could get real close to what these amps are supposed to do.
You can see from the pictures where he put the orange drops and guess what section he is modding.

I don't get what the big deal is with the Ultra mods?
Personally I would rather have an amp that is all Dumble, like the ODS or HRM.

Although that one modded Deluxe Reverb still haunts me. :D

Yes this is the sound I would like to get a handle on, thanks for the link.

I have also had a good chat with John Suhr via PM, for a legend among knaves (me...), he is an extraordinarily nice and helpful bloke :D
