HRM Bluesmaster build, 2 OTs, which would you use?

Post by mhartman »

I'm in the process of putting together a Ceriatone HRM Bluesmaster. I'm using my own iron and I'm all set with it except for the fact that I have two OTs sitting on my bench and I can't decide which to use.

I've got a Classic Tone bassman-style OT (multi-tap) and I have a Heyboer 50W plexi style OT (multi-tap) that came out of a EL34 Glaswerks SOD.

I would like to experiment with both 6L6s and EL34s when the amp is complete.

Which would you go with (and why)? Would one be more suited for using with both types of tubes? Is one mis-match superior to the other?

I've drilled/prepared the chassis for either in case I want to switch later, but I would prefer to "get it right" the first time.

Mike

BTW, other than selling some stuff, this is my first post.

Isn't the EL-34 the stock valve in a BM?

Start from there and later try the other iron with the 6L6's.

I use 6L6's in my amp, but that is due to ignorance, laziness, and tight-fisted-ness, but for all that the amp sounds pretty good with 6L6's.

I think the amp will sound okay either way.
Yours Sincerely

Just one guy's opinion of course, but I've been preferring Marshallesque OTs in my builds with both 6L6 and EL34 power tubes.

Yes, Gil Ayan once said his best sounding amp was one that had a Marshall OT running 6L6.

Thanks guys -- I appreciate the feedback. Based on your opinions (and the fact that I was just about 50/50), I'm thinking that I'll go ahead and start with the Marshall style OT.

Cheers,
Mike
