How do you guys like to set your OD tonestacks?
ive been having trouble tweeking my HRM's drive, how do you guys like to do it?
Re: How do you guys like to set your OD tonestacks?
After playing a D-style inspired amp for a week or so and being frustrated with the HRM tone stack, I removed it and use a quasi 5E3 tone stack and like the simplicity and tone real well.
I've done this on 4 different amps now and like the results.

Re: How do you guys like to set your OD tonestacks?
the first real Dumbles I had access to were late '90's HRM models and I was rather underwhelmed. In hind site some of that opinion was probably related to operator error on my part. Fast forward to a couple years ago when I took another stab at one with a much more open mind. These are now my favorite flavor. What I've done is worked with the basic HRM schem with some slight differences.
HRM tonestack has a 330pf treble cap and 100k slope. HRM trimmers are 130k to mid connection bass, 90k to bass connection treble, and 5k to ground mid. 330pf snubber caps on V2. The two phase inverter caps are .05. Very fat sounding, plenty of all frequencies but none over powering. Not as "boogyish as a none HRM but still similar. "Using Marshall style trannies with 465v on the plates with EL34's is a huge, smooth sound that still has lots of "clang". Great transition between clean, clean boost, OD, OD boost. A little boost through the FET channel even sounds nice with the circuit. I use these exclusively with a loop box but this amp works well without one too.
Anyway, we all hear things differently but this is what works for me.

Is this a new amp? If so, let it break in before making any drastic changes.noworrybeefcurry wrote:ive been having trouble tweeking my HRM's drive, how do you guys like to do it?
But overall, I can't imagine ever removing the HRM part of my amp. I love what I can get this amp to do. One thing that I first realized is not having the HRM bass trim up very much at all was better. I can't give you exact measurements because I forget. But, it is barely on.
The one thing I do remember when I built the amp was playing through the amp for a couple weeks outside of the of the head cab. I did alot of bonding with it with different settings before I settled on a good balance.

10thTx-
Ive tried the treble bleeder mod, but never went so far as to convert over to the 5e3 tonestack. Does the deluxe tonstack on the OD section shape the drive in a noticable way, or does it simply kill some highs?
tubedogsmith-
Im with you 100% I know alot of guys here like the non hrm's better-apparently they're easier to play. But ive always found a bit of a harsh tone in them. As far as my amp though, i currently have a 33k slope-ill try the 100k.
SoundPerf-
right now ive been running my bass all the way up (its a 500k) Is your bass pot a standard 1meg? or something like ceriatone's 250k?

The HRM bass trimmer is 220K and the main bass pot is 500K. And yes, I have a Ceriatone HRM 50. I forget to mention that.noworrybeefcurry wrote:SoundPerf-

I have this on all three of my amps and yes it works very similarly to a 5E3 tone stack and is not just a treble bleed.
I should add that the one knob OD tone stack is on the front of the chassis (vs. trimpots inside the chassis), & I find easy access to be a useful feature. I have used both full sized pots and smaller mini-pots without a knob on them when space has been an issue.
Tone is quite subjective, but I did not care for the HRM and found it very difficult to dial in something I liked. This quasi-5E3 works for me. But each to his own.

Re: How do you guys like to set your OD tonestacks?
Thanks 10thTx
this looks like a cool project
I'm not the best with schematics...
V2 has interesting things there...lots of caps, and why/what is the 1M circled in pink
I have some iron for around this size project ...
any clips of this or similar builds?
Thanks
Darin

The circled pink area is the quasi-5E3 tone stack with a 1M pot.

The amp is in a fairly small tweed style cab that's about the same size of a 5E3. I like how small it is. Uses a Emminence Red, White & Blues

This soundclip shows the contrast between the clean and OD which is footswitchable. The soundclip has the OD towards the end. Again, pretty mediocre playing at best.

I am NOT a very good player so please excuse the sloppy playing. Hopefully this will give you some sense of the tone of the amp I posted a schematic of. It's about 14 watts using 6V6's.any clips of this or similar builds?

Wow! beautiful cab and sounds good too
I have some Vibrolux style 40Watt iron...
what are your thoughts on using this iron?

I like your playing!
What reverb circuit did you use?
Peace,
Markus
Re: How do you guys like to set your OD tonestacks?
When I hear the truly great players on this forum, I am always hesitant to post anything. I just don't have the ear or the talent.
Sure I think you could use the Vibrolux iron. You might need to adjust the B+ rail dropping resistors for V1 - V3, but that would be pretty easy.
Thanks for the nice remarks.
There is no reverb. I think I may have used a boss digital delay in the passive effects & had that set somewhat slight? Or it may have been recorded dry? I added some delay in the mixdown.

When I looked at you images at photobucket I saw an amp with an accutronics reverb. Thought it was the amp you posted the clips.

Re: How do you guys like to set your OD tonestacks?
If you're referring to the cab with the 10" Ragin Cajun, that was my 56T amp that was modeled after DaGeezer's HoSo56.I saw an amp with an accutronics reverb. Thought it was the amp you posted the clips.
Same chassis. Same cab (sorta). I actually shortened the height of the cab in that photo by about 1" since the photo.
However, I gutted the chassis and put in a new board. It no longer has reverb and instead has a passive effects loop & relay switching between OD and clean. I just use the Boss digital delay instead. It's a pretty tight fit in a small tweed chassis.

Re: How do you guys like to set your OD tonestacks?
I backed off the bass a bunch and the notes seem to be much more defined all around, those lower mids dont muddy out. Thanks for the tip.SoundPerf wrote:The HRM bass trimmer is 220K and the main bass pot is 500K. And yes, I have a Ceriatone HRM 50. I forget to mention that.noworrybeefcurry wrote:SoundPerf-
