Those kind of voltages scare the crap out of me. I am guessing that the amps were built for commercials installations (theaters etc). The noise factor of the amp itself (blowers etc) would not be too practical for most uses.

I looked at building a 4CX250 or 300 bass amp at one time, but the forced air cooling and 2500Vdc on the plates was a bit much

.

Now there are a few conduction cooled tubes out there that may work for a mega audio amp. Imagine the size of the iron.....

Amps like those were used to power the personal speaker systems at drive in movie theaters.

The good news is if you slip while working on one you wouldn't live to tell about it.

And a ventilator. Those are Mercury vapor rectifiers and are mighty toxic (if they should break).

Believe it or not there is a small fraction of the tube hi-fi crowd that it into these for home use.

Got a phone call from TAG member benoit one day to come over to the music store.

I get there and a guy has the largest tubes I have ever seen in his custom built amp. He fired the amp up for me and we talked to the guy for awhile, crazy high voltage. I can't remember the tube numbers though.

He was getting a very large case to haul it around in.
