Is it just me...
or has this forum jumped the shark...
Re: Is it just me...
I feel you Bill.
There are a few people here that insist on insulting other members. Most of whom are serious contributors and have give the shirts off of their backs.
Makes no sense to kill the goose that laid the golden egg.

Yes, it looks like too many people with varying and even opposing viewpoints than the small "clique" that I suppose this forum was only ever meant to be for have become members. The horror......wjdunham wrote:or has this forum jumped the shark...
I see the word "greed" thrown around. Let's see, this is straight from merriam webster:
a selfish and excessive desire for more of something (as money) than is needed
hmm, let's ponder a long time on this one.

Re: Is it just me...
Man, at the risk of feeding the trolls, newer members of this forum might benefit from doing some (admittedly somewhat difficult) homework to see what the "clique" has posted in the past, how much has been shared, and how much of a distinct lack of greed there has been. Everyone (including trolls) are entitled to their opinion, but this forum has been an incredibly good source of information for all interested parties for a long time, and has for the most part been respectful even in disagreement. It'd be really nice to keep it that way.
Sadly, I've seen other forums reach some sort of critical mass after awhile where that becomes no longer practicable. I sincerely hope Amp Garage won't go that way. Meanwhile, I'll just AGAIN publicly thank Brandon, Scott, Henry, Shad, Tony, Tom, and Lord knows how many other people who I can't think of off the top of my head for their patience and help offered willingly.

I really liked your perseverance on the PI thing. I 've seen many highligts the past 3 years and that was one of them.greiswig wrote: Meanwhile, I'll just AGAIN publicly thank Brandon, Scott, Henry, Shad, Tony, Tom, and Lord knows how many other people who I can't think of off the top of my head for their patience and help offered willingly.

However, why can't we simply expel the trolls? IMO they have been given many hints and fair warning. (IMHO there's no reason for the 'clique' paranoia what so ever). People at this forum are gentlemen (or women) in general.
When I joined this forum back in 2007, I took some time to read through most of the posts on in order to understand the nature of Dumble amps. And I did so out of frustration over how harsh my (at the time) newly build amp kit sounded.
I've build many amps over time and newer realised the importance of lead dress nor the importance of burn-in time so I went through a LOT of mods until I realised that it was mostly a matter of maturing the amp.
In all due respect, new forumites cannot expect fellow forumites to answer the same questions over and over and over. Please use the 'search' bottom once in a while - most questions have been answered - before asking questions. Its much more fun when questions are a little difficult - if so - you always get a lot of responses.

As a new guy around here (and a novice) I'd like to thank the kind folks here for sharing their knowledge and teaching. In time, I hope to be able to pay-it-forward as I learn enough to be a useful and productive member of the community.
Re: Is it just me...
Yeah the files and threads are not the best organized on the web but if you are diligent and read, you will find a wealth of information here.
And really, there aren't that many threads on this forum compared to some so if a person spent a few days I think they could read just about every pertinent thread here.
Something I have noticed since I joined here is, that most here are pretty well educated in tube theory.
They took the time and devoted many hours to learn theory and tricks about tube amps.
So bare that in mind when you ask a question that could be easily answered with a simple Google search or even the search button in this forum.
If you spend some time researching and still can't find the answer then feel free to ask away, that is something we can appreciate.
Forget about the SSS amp, it is currently being sold by a few of the pro builders here so there isn't a lot of sharing by them, understandably so.
Frankly I can't see a huge demand for such a powerful amp but some guys like them and I suppose they would make a great pedal platform.
It is exceedingly hard to make a living selling amps until you get a reputation for good tone and quality builds.
That takes a while.
I know after building a couple ODS type amps that there is a tremendous amount of labor in those amps.
I just hope we can keep this forum as a friendly place where we can share ideas and help each other solve problems.
After all, it's our love of tube amps that brings us here to build and discuss them.
I for one would like to see a couple troublemakers booted.
Anybody that gets off on baiting other members or are simply here to troll and stir up the shit, have no place here.

The "Pay It Forward" philosophy is a great mantra to have on forums such as this.NickC wrote:

Think about the time and effort somebody took to help you out when you needed it.
Most of us can remember when we didn't know squat and how frustrating it can be when you don't get something.
Try to reflect on that when somebody asks a question.
You can usually tell if they are just trolling or are genuinely trying to learn
something.
We were all there at some point.
Remember that some people are are not able to glean information from reading text as others can.
Some are more visual so a diagram or picture will help more.
I know the text books are pretty much necessary in a technical field like this but I remember in college a professor told us there were roughly three types of people.
There are the ones that can learn by reading.
Others that learn by seeing or touching something to feel how it is done and others that learn by hearing somebody tell them how to do it.
Lets keep this a friendly place and put the egos and snarkiness aside and get back to building tube amps!

+1 Structo, i can testify by personal experiance how helpfull folks are on here, as a result novices like me can glean knowledge that is sometimes seen to be the preserve of higher mortals
Re: Is it just me...
Oh, I've inserted my foot in my mouth that ended up in my ass years ago on this forum.
But I learned rather quickly this is a great Forum and there isn't a day I don't log in to check what's going on.
This place is addicting, educational, humorous at times and a big part of my life. Thanks.
Great group of very talented people.

Re: Is it just me...
Yeah, let's simply do that. However, why can't we simply expel the trolls?
Yeah...Ok, thinking there's a core group here that stand in judgement is just paranoid. Ha!
This says it better than I ever could. And with this I'll leave.

If theres a a moderator here it would be a good idea to just delete this thread and the one about ceriatone. (obviously this is a continuation of that one)
It is a never ending subject that will only grow to an even worse extreme!
Now theres talk about expelling people for voicing they're opinions.
I actually had to just recently look up what a troll was, and although some here can be more emotional in they're posts than others. I have yet to see someone here post that either doesn't want to learn tube amps or already have some sort of grasp on the subject!
Time to move forward.
I am 6 feet tall, so there is no way I could be a troll

Re: Is it just me...
Yeah this forum is a daily read for me as well. I dont post here very often
becuase I dont know the best answers all the time. I think its a good group of poeple and the disgruntled ones should work out their
differences or hold their tounges. A FAQ sticky would help out a little bit
as well to stop newbie questions constantly being asked.

Hi Todd,
I am the mod here. I have not heard any talk of expelling people.
As long as this thread stays friendly, it is OK.
