Redplate Magic Dust Duo

Post by boldaslove6789 »

I played a Redplate Magic Dust Duo at a friends house the other day.

As per forum rules here is a breakdown of the amp (to the best of my knowledge) . I included a clip, which may be a somewhat poor representation of what this circuit is capable of but I included it anyways

The amp has HRM and NON-HRm Overdrive, Single control clean tonestack with a Rotary Knob to switch different voices (Tweed, Brown,Blackface) and a Buffered effects loop (D-lator).

To my knowledge (please correct me if I'm wrong Henry :) ) the HRM tonestack has the OD trimmer (AKA Trigger), OD Gain, and OD Volume as well as Treble, Middle, and Bass Controls with MID and Preamp Boost. All on the front panel

The NON-HRm has the same OD trimmer (AKA trigger), OD Gain, and OD Level controls but with no tonestack.

As well as being able to use both Overdrives (1 & 2) cascaded into each other.

The Clean has One Tonestack control, and the Rotary knob with 6 positions of Tweed,Brown, and black face voicings.

The Buffered effects loop does not have send/return controls but is set so that you can thow whatever you want in the loop with no need to muk around with levels to balance everything out, just grab and go.

pretty accurate description - the front end is tweed based with a way to cut mids and preamp output to get the black and brown modes. The overall preamp output has to be reduced to feed the overdrives. There is no traditional master , in fact one of the mods on the RedPlate site (Mod#2) is to add a couple of resistors to simulate a 1MA set at noon for a pseudo master. The loop does have an internal trimmer for a send (factory set like a 250kA pot at noon) and the return is the front panel control labeled Master.
Here's a gut shot of a CosmicDust (same amp with 6V6 outputs):

I'm very impressed with the innards of the amp. It looks cleaner inside than most Dumble style builds people post. And that's not calling those builds sloppy, it's saying that yours is very clean!

Henry, as always - great tones coming out of your amps!

Just took a look at your 'mod #1' also....why do you lift the V1 cathode ground with a 47ohm resistor. Is that front part of the amp producing ground loop noise in particular?

Mod#1 is signal path - not cathode. HH

Suprisingly it's just an Eminence Swamp Thing in an Epiphone Valve JR. 1x12 cap. And It was Loud too!
