Best 47uF/250V radial cap for Precision Power Supply Board?

Post by David Root »

Anyone care to pass along the benefit of their experience in this? I am looking for long life, low ESR. Does that automatically come with a 105 deg C rating vs. an 85 deg C? Not sure on that.

Mouser has a Nichicon UPW2E470MHD that fits, and Vishay Sprague has one in the 517D series also, but it is twice the price. What do you get for that with the Sprague?

The boards I have will fit a 16mm diameter case with 7.5mm lead spacing. This seems to be a common size in the 47uF/250V.

Is there anything to be gained by going up a bit on voltage rating for the screen pair? This is going in a #183 so the screens are pretty close to the combined 500V rating of the pair. Vp=465V.

On the precision PSU the screen filter cap pair are 350V. All the others are 250V.
Look at the precision PSU layouts closely, you'll see ;)

In looking at #183 layout, I think the polarity marking on the top of the second 47uf 350v cap is backwards.
Shows the + end going to ground.
I know there is a big + near the bottom of the cap, it's the marking on top of the cap I am talking about.

I know it is common sense that the - end would go to ground but just for clarity it should be changed.

OK, that makes sense. I think anywhere from 300V to 350V should be OK on the screens. Fortunately 47uF/350 are available in the same case diameter and lead spacing as the 250V.

So which manufacturers/type numbers do folks like?
