Has anyone used an octal socket relay in a 2nd/3rd gen?

Post by sonicmojo »

Hey guys,

I am researching parts for a 2nd/3rd gen custom build but the relay options are throwing me off a little. Do you think something like this octal socket relay would work okay? At least it would look kind of similar to the Calrad.

Thanks!

Those octal socket relays are quite large for the application.
As far as the ability to work. If the coil voltage is correct and the contacts are rated high enough, in this case OVERKILL
Oh and make sure the coil is Dc voltage
Ive watched 12vdc burn up/melt a 12vac rated relay coil.
I never knew 12vdc could do that much damage!

The size will be an issue though.

Try this
NEC miniature low signal DPDT 12v sealed
Mouser part# 551-MR62-12USRY

hope that helps some.

The Octal relay base had screw terminals rather than the ability to solder permanately also .

Todd,

Thanks for the feedback. I may go the miniature route but am hoping to keep faithful to the 70s style and avoid another board. Not a big deal though. I also found a 12VDC relay at Radio Shack for $10 that looks similar to the old Calrad. I'll likely experiment with a couple of options.
