Anyone running Weber Thames, Texas, or??? with D circuits?

Post by Billion81 »

I ordered up some Weber Thames which appear to be SRO variants- Kind of a hair brain move but thought I would see if anyone is running SRO/Alnico speakers or any of the SRO Clones out there?

Also - What cabinet for these speakers>??? I'm thinking about calling Kerry Wright and having him build a 2X12 with deeper sides to accomodate the speakers with an oval back.

I would be running these with a 90s EL34 HRM, and a 100 watt 70s NON HRM 6l6 unit.

I run these with Celestion Alnicos today and it is far away the best tone I have gotten- Hopefully the Thames won't be a total disaster.

There's along story here but cut to the chase. soundwise the Weber Michigan Alnico paper dustcover is pretty close to an EV Alnico SRO. Not perfect but pretty close, especially the low mids.

Thanks for your answer. I spoke with Mark Kane for a bit yesterday and he stated as you did above that the Michigan's are the closest.

Since I have no basis of reference from an actual SRO- I'll make a run at playing around with the Thames-

Tubedogsmith- I hate to press the issue but I would certainly like to hear the "long story" regarding this subject.

I can say that other than the Fane Studio 12 I am pretty much an Alnico convert-

I am heading up to Kerry Wright's spot later this morning to get my deposit in on a 2X12 oval back for the Thames similar to what Landau is using.

I have a WGS Blackhawk that is pretty nice, and supposedly a lower sensitivity soundalike to the EV SRO. It sounds good, but not as good as some other speakers I've tried in there, like:

Scumnico, Celestion G12-65, Scumback J75-LDHC, EVM-12S

I ran up to Fullerton and met up with Kerry Wright. Man, that guy is way on point. Full on artisan. Anyway- Special Deep Back Oval Ported for the Thames.

My main amp is one of Mark Kane's 100 watt ODS 70s non- HRM and with Alnicos there is a compression that is just angelic with the Alnicos-

I only recently discovered Alnicos when I picked up a 4X12 Marshall JTM45 40th Anniv. that has the Limited Edition Celestion Blue/Silver speakers- It's a brilliant cab but the speakers are very low powered and I will surely blow those up soon as that rig was meant to be run as an 8X12 config to handle the power on the JTM45/100.

I do love the M75 Scumback 4X12 I have for just killer rock tones with my 90s EL34 HRM style stuff but Alnicos are so much more complex from a note and harmonic content standpoint.

After 30 years of playing I am finally diving in to this area of the signal chain and am woefully under informed on all the variants-

Is the Altec 417 what Howard was using with his cabs at some point. I'll add that one to my list of speakers to investigate.

I still would like to hear the "long story" RE: SRO/Weber Michigan that tubedogsmith mentioned.

Hey Ted,

How do the AXA 12s sound with your various Dumble style amps? I only got to hear the one in your Zingaro, which sounded great together. Wonderful clean tones.
Eardrums!!! We don't need no stinkin' eardrums!

Hey Darin- They sound great!! I run the AXAs in the Green Cab with the El34 90s amp stereo with the 6l6 head for live gigs- It's a ridiculous rig but for the larger shows it just shines like crazy.

We do a Police bit with all the Summers chorus stuff and it's pretty magical.

That's why the Medusas are up..All Alnico, all the time!!

I'm anxious to try the Webers as it would be nice not to have to haul the 4X12 around along with all the other over indulgent gear I shlep to gigs

I really like the Fane studio 12L in a front ported design.

Indeed- that's the only Ceramic speaker that's staying in the quiver.
