Yet another speaker cabinet advice post....

Post by ER »

I'm gearing up to build a 100 watt EL34 amp in a JCM800 size chassis and cabinet which will be 29" wide, this will sit perfectly on my 4x12 cabinet, but I have a pair of EVM 12L's and want to use them with the amp, my options are;

1) a dumble style oval port 2x12
or
2) a pair of tl806 cabinets

Either would be the same 29" wide, but here's another wrinkle; I have a bunch of walnut to build cabinets with but nothing quite deep enough for a tl806 cabinet so those would have to be done in plywood. So a walnut head and 2x12 oval back cab or plain old tolex and tl806's. I was almost considering a twin style combo cabinet but that would end up being silly heavy.

thanks, ER

based on your supplies I'd build the oval cabinets.

Unless you have a roadie moving your gear. Your back will thank you for not having to lift a combo. They are both heavy and ackward!.. great for tweaking the lower back.

Oh man, a Dumble combo with two EVM 12L's!
I wonder if they make a handle that would support that much weight?

There have been a few guys that have made double TL806 cabs joined but that would be heavier than hell.

Seems like a lot of guys are going with the 1x12 cabs these days so they can use one or two depending on the gig.
I'm old school and still like the looks of a 4x12 so the smallest I go is a 2x12 with two EVM 12L's but it is a beast.

Two bad they have to be so heavy to be good speakers.
Waiting for the day when they perfect light magnets.

Some guys like the hardwood head cabinets and I think they look good on some amps but for a Dumble clone I think part of the look is the way Alexander made the cabs with the crossbar and cutout on top and the grill below.

Take a couple of hours and open up the 4-12". Take out all the speakers and put the two EVs in. Close the back. Test drive.

+1 Good advice.

Two 1x12s is the way I go, 4x12s are Hernia City...

I have two TL806s from Boogafunk. One has a EV12L, the other a Fane Studio 12L. Both sound great and VERY similar. Great with Dumbles & Marshalls.

Then I have two Avatar 1x12 oval backs with Altec 417Bs in them. Different animals! Great with tweeds and any old school amp. Loud!

My Marshall 1966A (2X12 diagonal) cab has EVM 12L's, one is over 30 years old.

The 4X12 has EV's as well. This only comes out for the big $$$ gigs.......when I can hire an ape to pick up the 225 lbs in the case

I have preferred EV to everything else since they came out in the 70's.

I thought about putting EV's in my Bag End 2X12....but the OEM speakers sound very good (probably spec built Emmies) built late 70's.

Every amp rig I have sounds stellar through any of these cabs.

EV is the shit! Let's you hear exactly what the amp sounds like.

My 2 cents anyway.

Back to the regularly scheduled program............................. :D

Yeah that's why I sprung for a pair, they are the best all round I've ever used and never failed. I had a pair in my dean markley 120 twin back in the day (yes it was very heavy) and a single in my dean markley 30 combo, then a stereo ported pair of 12's when I was doing the boogie rack thing, and finally higher-power stereo rack with 2 4-10 open back cabinets with EVM 10"s. I did like the fanes in my hiwatts but never played well with celestions and always preferred open back to closed or ported.

I don't have roadies at my disposal, and I'm less into feats of strength like I used to be 20 years ago.

I'll probably go with the detuned route at first since that's cheap and easy, and I do have an oval back pine 2-12 with 5/8" floating baffle but it's 32" tall. I can at least try it out before building another 2x12 to regular D-spec to match the head.

I think I'll go with the 2-12 in the long run, and possible add a pair of 1-12's down the road to give me some flexibility and the ability to do a wet-dry-wet set-up with a 2-12 in the middle for dry. Now that you all jogged my memory it seems I preferred the sound of the 2-12 combo to the ported singles so I think I'll investigate the semi-open back route for the main cabinet just not in a ridiculously heavy combo format.

Thanks, ER

I really like the EV's but I find them to all be overly bright. They work well in the mix, but if I'm just listening to an amp for sake of listening after a few minutes they hurt my ears.

Though since ever amp requires some sort of speaker to hear it. I guess it depends on which speaker it was voiced around.

IMHO I would go with the Ev's in tl806 cabinets. I switched to Celestion G1265's in my 2x12 cab because the Ev's are soooo F'in heavy. With an amp chassis, transformers, the speakers etc. it will be super heavy, and unethical. The theile cabs are light, quick, and easy and I think you'll like the portability. Plus you can grab 1 for small gigs, 2 for big gigs.

Agreed , 2 tl806's is the way I'd go. I built 1 tl806 and it's easy to grab and go. I may build a match for it.

A trick that Carvin uses to keep their cabinets light is to use poplar plywood. It is MUCH lighter than other plywoods I've seen. I have a SWR 2-10 cab and a Carvin 2-10 cab (both ported bass cabinets) and although the Carvin cab is slightly larger and the speakers in both are about the same, the Carvin cabinet is noticeable lighter. Poplar plywood costs a little more than Baltic birch plywood and seems to be harder to find, but any good supply house should be able to order it.

Anybody try an EV in a fender 12" tone ring style cabinet? About the same size as a dumble 2x12 (21"x30"x11.5") using a single 12. Might be the best of both worlds...
