Mini HRM/86 Special build

Post by rogb »

Just finishing up the combo cab for this build, while waiting for the faceplates (which I collected today) and a couple of parts I forgot. It needs some final trimming and edge straightening and the speaker baffle needs to be cut, when it arrives.

PS board complete and now to start on the HRM and preamp boards.
Chassis part drilled to match front and rear panels

Please don't expect anything as neat as Jonas's superb build, OK? :)

Astonishing build quality! I just kept looking at the pics over and over again in disbelief. I am just not that tidy, and when you have done a bit of tinkering and tweaking , it all goes a bit messy (in my case, anyway).

Thanks for the nice comments, guys.

As usual, I messed up my Mouser order (even with the BOM... )and forgot 1 x .022uf Orange Drop for the HRM board and the 33k resistor. My good pal Phil at Bluebell Audio posted me a couple of resistors and a film .022 to tide me over. What a great guy.

Nice cabinet.

You refer to Jonas's build (pictures?) yet I can't seem to find them. Can you post the thread?

I look forward to following your build.

A kind of frustrating day yesterday, I have now built and populated the HRM and PS boards, so I started on the main board as detailed in layout and the combination of schematics needed for this build.

One thing I can say is it completely possible to eyelet without any bought-in specialist tools. The main board took me around 10 mins to drill and eyelet with my 45 degree taper tool and the flat end of an old punch, easy!

I started the chassis drill and did the front and rear panels marked out from the faceplates, and began drilling the tube holes with my slightly blunt cone cutter, great!

I discovered I had missed out quite a few parts, partly down to my poor reading eyesight going over different papers, partly down to low res images making it hard to read the values.

Another factor is my habit of forgetting to "tick" off the parts on the plans as I ordered them, which is just sheer stupidity.

So, in the early hours after getting in at about midnight, I tried to put an order together of caps and resistors missing from UK suppliers like Farnell, RS and Rapid. This wasted a good hour before I gave up, went to Mouser and ordered $30 of parts and swallowed the $20 shipping to the UK. Sometimes enough is enough and I guess I just had to pay for my all-round sloppiness.

Things I have learned:
If you are ordering from another continent, you must, must must, check and check over again that have everything for your build, trouble is I get excited when I am ordering and can't wait to press the "buy" button. This is a very costly way to shop, as you may have guessed.

Don't be a cheapskate, buy the correct hole punches for your tubes, it saves so much time, effort and keeps everything neat.
I have always been a "make do" kind of a workman, but a little money spent here is well spent.

OK, back to the chassis drilling...

Cab pretty much finished, just popped the faceplate in to give you an idea - just waiting on some parts to complete the boards, then I can begin installing the pots and wiring up the chassis, then PT OT fitting.

Speaker arrived today - 10" Emi Delta Lite - so I finished the baffle board and need to get some longer Allens to fit it.

That is a nice looking cabinet and faceplate you did great work on this.

I feel your pain regarding the component list. The Dumble amps are part hogs. :)

I either forget or can't find certain parts all the time. :)

The 12 x 2" cost £30 +VAT for the pair.

Contact Paul here and send him a DXF file of what you need

I don't think the postage will be too much.

Thanks for the tip ! I'll contact him as soon as I have the front and back plates made. I'm just beginning to learn the Inkscape software. Very slow process
