Filtercap through chassis?

Post by Joost »

This filtercap through the chassis near the relay boards has me confused. I am working on drawings for a custom chassis and and the layout shows an electrolytic cap through the chassis, but the commercially available chassis don't seem to have a hole for them?

Also, this picture of a 124 build doesn't show it. What is the correct answer?

In #124 there is a can cap;
If you use F&T caps on the filter board you have some room for the other filter nodes. Sprague's are insane big.

Thanks, but where can I get that brown part to hold the cap under the chassis?

The brown part is the bottom of the cap. All you need is the can cap and a mounting clamp. (And a hole in the chassis if you don't already have one there.)

The clamps look like this:

used to be a can/thru was the only option, nowadays w/ the advent of modern dielectrics, a radial sizewise can be glued inside

Yeah, most of us don't use the can cap such as #124 has.

Modern 20-22uF caps are much smaller in size so you can put four on the filter cap board.

Or build the precision power supply. :wink:

Don't let that smoke out!

Yeah, I've thought about the precision power supply, but here's the thing. I managed to find some sprague atom caps of the right value for filtering, so I thought I'd use them.

I got some 320uf 350v caps from Steve here on the board and I got these, will these fit on a classic power filter board?

Unless you tell me the precision power filtering board has significant advantages in tone or build

CE Manufacturing 20/20uF 450VDC Multi Section Can Capacitor is a good substitute.
