I'm preparing to do a few gigs with this guy........

Post by Rob Livesey »

I've been asked to play second guitar on a small tour to support a friends new album. No probs, I like his album, I reckon I'll do a good job, then I see what he's taking on tour..... !

What would you pit against this on stage???

You know, that's not far away from what I'm thinking. I need to be a foil to his tones. I'm thinking of using my vintage Pro Reverb with a few choice pedals. The other option is my Fuchs ODS 100 combo, or perhaps both and switching between.

Wow, just wow - what a collection you've got there.

I would probably take the MPX1 lexi + loopalator in a 2U rack
1 amp head (+ 1 spare)
1 cabinet

that would be simpler and still super flexible.

I would go with vox-ish sounding rig and a tele...

...maybe a Rocket clone.

Whoah there boy :D , that's not my rig, it's his. And it's what I'm up against on stage ! He has some serious tone going down, and the whole thing including the rack IS on stage AT ONCE, and all switching via a Skrydstrup system.

Well Rob if you are just pulling strictly rhthym duty, perhaps a straight up simple rig is in order.

A nice clean or semi clean tone and tele or strat (if you play those) for reinforcement to his guitar god rig. :D

There are certain requirements, strat tone is one of them, funky clean is another. It's 90% rhythm, but there's a fair bit of heavy riffing and some harmony lead parts.

Hi Rob.

How closely do you need to reproduce the album?

I'd have to think about that first.

I agree with Tom about a Strat or Tele, & personally, I'd lean toward the Tele...

Have fun on tour!

Bob

Rob, I would go with what you have and run both amps switching between them as you stated. That will cover a large palatte of tones.

He's got the mids covered and then some. If you bring a mid-heavy rig it will sound cluttered and take away from his tone. I would go with something that is scooped in the mids to leave him some room, since that appears to be his turf. A blackface Fender as you suggested with a couple choice pedals would be a good idea in my book. I would agree with the Strat or Tele choice. The Strat is the better choice for me, but it depends on the music and how you like to play.

Personally, I'd be shooting to find something that contrasted but still hit the mark for the music style. Maybe a Telecaster and a Tone King Metropolitan or a Vox-ish sounding thing, along with a couple of good OD pedals. The Metro is nice on its own, but really is able to contrast nicely against my D'Lite build.

I should have really stated what I've got available to me from my amp stash.

Currently:

Vintage Pro Reverb
Vintage Deluxe Reverb
Fuchs ODS 100 SLX as a head or combo (I have both cabs), so with the head I run a Fuchs widebody 1x12
Fuchs Train 45
Trainwreck Express clone
Marshall 50w plexi clone
'69 basketweave 4x12 cab
....in progress.... Vibroclone

The idea of not occupying the same sonic space is a good one. Mind you, his rig occupies a lot of space ! But he's the singer too and often drops out completely and fills between vocals.

I think I also need two amps on stage so at least I have a backup. I'm erring on the side of the Pro and the Fuchs ODS, switching between the two with my Fulltone Truepath ABY. He also loves the sound of the Pro having heard it recently at a little gig nearby (my wedding actually!).

Guitars wise, it has to be a strat, there's no compromise there as I'm covering some lovely vibrato parts off the album.

Hehehehe, with that arsenal I would be tempted to use the express since you can control the mean to clean with the guitar volume control.

Not me I would go with the ProReverb has the power and cleans for stage use and the Fuchs ODS can get both clean and overdrive.

The only other one I like would be the Marshall 50w clone.
