Power Supply/ New Build #183 clone

Post by CHIP »

Thought I'd post a picture of how I decided to deal with using 330 mF 400V caps on Jason's board (which are great).

Sweet bracketry!

Looking at the standup resistors next to your big PSU caps, I've always been warned by my dad not to bend the very ends of resistors like that. It supposedly weakens them, but it hasn't been an issue for me with smaller CF, CC and MF resistors. Anybody have any bad experiences with this? It seems to be a bigger problem on old HV signal caps and power resistors, I have had a few that weakened and/or broke after I made the needed bends.

I've never had a problem with 1 watt resistors.

Same here Cliff.

I usually take my very small needle nose pliers and grab the lead right next to the resistor body and then bend the lead down.
You want to keep that kind of stress off the lead where it enters the component.

This is true on any through hole component.

I remember reading about that I think in the NASA soldering guide.

Same here. It's really only been a problem for me with some older parts. I'm guilty of bending right at the ends as well and have never had a new part break this way. Not to sound condescending btw, I've been lectured more than once on doing this and so I was wondering what others do about this is all. I do what Tom does, grab the needlenose pliers and space it off a bit.

I don't really think there's any stress on those power supply resistors.
I would have done what Tom suggested but the lead length warranted otherwise.

Wow, those are some monster filters. Why so much filtering?

I'm just going by the #183 layout that Tony did a wonderful job on.
there in series, so that makes em 165mF

Yeah, I used two 320uF in series in my last amp. :D
My low end is far from being too tight.

That makes since, but you don't really need 440V caps there, 350V is overkill.

Board looks great.

Yeah I agree with you Bob, I could have went with 350V, but HAD used 385V and mine are 400V.
Thanks for the compliment.

Here's a pic of the finished product. bringing up the voltages with a variac,
everything seems ok so far. once I give it full voltage, I'll see how it sounds.

Looks good Chip!

I think you will be pleased when you strike the first chord. :D
