Hi all,
I'm about to convert my purple head into a combo and I wondering if there are any insights/advice anyone would care to share about their own experiences of doing this. Particularly with regard to any interaction between speaker and trannies. I seem to recall, a number of years ago, that some people had problems with this.
The purple head is the scratch build that I initially had transformer hum whilst in standby mode, due to the proximity of the PT and OT, which was resolved due to the kind help from the esteemed forumites. I'm hoping that by asking first, I won't have to suffer any anxiety as to whether it will have any avoidable issues.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Have a great weekend,
Paul.

Re: Conversion to Combo
It has been discussed whether or not tubes can be affected by having large magnets too close to them.
If I recall there was no real conclusion but most guessed the effect was null.
After all, look at all the old Fender combos that had the amp right next to the speaker magnet.
The main concern is to build the cab so that there is enough room between the transformers and tubes so there is no physical interference between them and the speaker(s).
This is especially a concern if you want two 12" speakers in the cab, as the magnet will be closer to the power transformer.
Fender amps traditionally had very narrow chassis with the tubes hanging down from the side of the chassis.
With the wider chassis of the Dumble amp, you have to plan more carefully.

Tom,
Thanks for the response. I remembered that it was discussed at one time, but I couldn't remember what the conclusion was.
I'll have a go this afternoon and see what happens.
cheers,
Paul.

Re: Conversion to Combo
You could also take a 1x12 extension speaker, remove its carry handle and mount the head on it with the Fender piggyback hardware. Much less work and no significant interactions.
Re: Conversion to Combo
Is the piggyback hardware robust enough to withstand slinging the combination around by one handle or the other?David Root wrote:You could also take a 1x12 extension speaker, remove its carry handle and mount the head on it with the Fender piggyback hardware. (I'm assuming the goal is a single object to be hauled around.)

I've only got one 1x12 cab and so, would prefer to keep it as it is, but still a good idea. Thanks. You could also take a 1x12 extension speaker, remove its carry handle and mount the head on it with the Fender piggyback hardware. Much less work and no significant interactions.

That's correct. I'm after a small 'grab and go' rig to add to my ever expanding ODS collection.(I'm assuming the goal is a single object to be hauled around.)
Thanks for the suggestions.
Cheers,
Paul.

combo cabinet
I don't know if it will be of any assistance to you but if you go to the Ceriatone forum and search "Overtone combo cabinet " and find
the fifth record which should read "So I finally managed to build a cab for my OTS" posted by "Mcinku." As you look through the postings you will find the dimensions of his combo cabinet. They may not be the exact dimensions you need. You might have to make adjustments to suit your chassis. From memory Mcinku uses a Celestion 12-65.
