Does anyone else prefer mismatched snubbers on V2?

Post by JD0x0 »

I recently removed the snubber off V2a and upped the value on V2b to closer to 800pf and im loving what it did to my tone. Less fuzz, more bloom, and "chirp"

anyone else do this and have similar results?
It's true i've lost my marbles and i cant remember where i put them

I noticed today that adding a .001 cap (pretty close to 800pf) anywhere between the V2a output and V2b input helps to lower the fizz. But I didn't try increasing the V2b snubber.

The wave form distortion in my amp, that I believe causes the fizz, looks like what occurs when a square wave is put through a low pass filter - where the falling edge of the waveform peak sharply drops and the rising edge of the waveform dip to sharply rises. See image.

On my amp the sharpness is greater on the peak side as, from what I can see, stage of V1 and V2 produces an asymmetrical waveform when driven - resulting in the clipping becoming more prominent on one side of the waveform than the other.

To see what would happen if the signal was more symmetrical, I tried lowering the cathode resistors in each stage until the signal appeared to float more evenly between the available voltage swing. But each stage required a more extreme resistance change - and though the overdrive seemed more pleasant it was likewise less remarkable and unexciting.

Has anyone driven a sine wave along the signal path and observed how it clips?

Did you just put it across a resistor or did you attach one end of the cap to ground?

...To Ground.

I liked it best, after the 100K that couples V2a to V2B. But obviously it works anywhere before or after V2b as a treble bleed.
