Equalizer pots and caps
Wanted to make a discussion on the effect of changing pot values on the eq.Im just not getting the mid boost or cut i need and wanted to hear about how changing the pot value effects hz range and how for example the bass value would affect the mid or all 3 for that matter.(Like a tone pot on a guitar all the way still effects the tone from different pot values I have heard.)Just doing some tweaking and wanted to hear what you guys had to say about it.
Re: Equalizer pots and caps
Hi Gary,
I have done a lot experimenting with the pot values on my 70s ODS.
The different values for the Bass pot used by HAD (250K, 500K and
1 Meg) have the most effect in "Jazz" mode, they work pretty much the same in "Rock" mode unless you run the control full up.Settings are different,
of course. The value of the Treble pot has way more effect in "Rock"
mode, the larger values (500 KL and 1 MA )give you a kind of hi-mid boost, also the
Bass and Mid controls only really work at lower settings of the Treble pot.
If you want a more effective control of mid frequencies I would experiment with the mid cap and/or slope resistor.Again, both the 100K
and 250K pot values work well, but the .01 mid cap used in the Skyliners and 70s amps limits the amount of cut.One nice variation for the "Classic"
tonestack I have found, not used on any real Dumbles, is the combination
of 150K slope and .033 midcap.Very nice and and Fender-ish but a little warmer than the .05 value.
Have a nice day Marcos

Re: Equalizer pots and caps
Thank you.I also need to get a mirror in there and see if I may have a wrong taper also.Been reading how that has affects it too.
Re: Equalizer pots and caps
for non-hrm i like the skyliner with a lower slope 70-90k (as opposed to 150k)
IMO it gives more bloom and touch sensativity. You also get a touch more fatness when you turn up the mids, it seems more pleasant. With the 150k slope it has what I can only descibe as a "plastic" sounding midrange which is more apparent in the upper mids

It's true i've lost my marbles and i cant remember where i put them
Re: Equalizer pots and caps
As far as I understood this http://www.schmarder.com/radios/tech/tone.htm it could in principle perhaps be calculated (taking into account of course the precise ODS structure like mid pot etc.), what kind of tone stack you would perhaps like - just to get some kind of starting point and guidance for a further trial and error procedure?gary sanders wrote:Wanted to make a discussion on the effect of changing pot values on the eq.Im just not getting the mid boost or cut i need and wanted to hear about how changing the pot value effects hz range and how for example the bass value would affect the mid or all 3 for that matter.(Like a tone pot on a guitar all the way still effects the tone from different pot values I have heard.)Just doing some tweaking and wanted to hear what you guys had to say about it.
