One Tube D Clone?

Post by Structo »

Today I turned on my amp and started playing after it warmed up.
Sounded pretty good and I had the volume fairly low.

Then it was a forehead slapping moment when I spied my other 6L6 sitting on another amp cab.
I had pulled one 6L6 because a week ago I had broke the plastic locating pin off. (RCA blackplate so I was pissed).
I had super glued the pin back on yesterday evening and set to the side to dry well before inserting it back into the amp.

I'll have to admit, I have never ran a two power tube amp with one power tube before.

I double checked the bias after plugging in the errant tube back into the amp.
Still the same setting I had made a few days ago.

How did it even sound half way decent and did I hurt anything by doing this?

You had a single ended power amp for a moment with a severe impedance mismatch.
On long term, the only disadvantage I can come up with, is: your OT will be magnetized.

+1 on erwin_ve's comments.

Because of the bias point you would still be able to get a swing either side of the bias voltage before cutoff (when the other tube would be taking up the slack, so to speak).

So at low volume it was acting as a single-ended amp biased very oddly!
