Which iron in UK for Ceriatone OTS HRM 50w?

Post by rogb »

Hi all
I'm just about to order my OTS HRM 50w, it is coming as a kit with no iron.

I have looked at Hammond and Mojotone (Heyboer) and am moving towards Mojotone.

What would you suggest please folks for OT, PT and CH. I need a 16ohm speaker output too for my cab.

I have done plenty of searches on here, and apart from Mercury, Hammond or Heyboer seem the ones to go for, but some specific part numbers would be really good to get too.

This is only my second build so I may be asking one or two more questions

Thanks
Rog

I could be wrong but for a 50W amp, the Mojotone 774 Bassman Transformer
should do the trick.

Allparts UK division list it here:

I'm sure that there must be a UK manufacturer who makes a good quality OT but their not as 'in tune' as our american friends when it comes to up front product positioning and listing everything on a website.

Thanks exocet, I think I will have to go with the Showman/Twin OT as it has 4/8/16 ohm outputs. I've got a great old Celestion G12-65 in 15ohms which I would like to use.

Yes I know what you mean about UK manufacturers, try and find your way round Majestic or Danbury, they are also quite expensive, I believe.

Yes but the Twin iron is 100 watt and will have a smaller primary impedance. (2K ohm)

Sorry Tom, I meant the Mojotone replacement for the Showman/Twin OT which has the 4/8/16 impedances.

I guess this should do the job.

That OT is 2K1 primary impedance. That is for a quad of 6L6.
A pair of 6L6 wants to see 4K.

You can adjust that by running the output impedance differently but I can never remember which way to go.
In other words, you would have to run a 8 ohm load on the 16 ohm tap, but I could be backwards on that.

I use a Fender Prosonic 50w OT on my amp. It has 4, 8, 16 ohm secondaries.
This one.

rogb,

I've read that many HRM builders have had success with Mojo's Marshall iron, such as the JT45 replacement. Depending on whether you want EL34 or 6L6's.

As Tom mentioned, the Twin iron is design for 4x 6L6 and so the primary impedance is not ideal for 2x 6L6.

It might be worth contacting Heyboer directly and asking them to quote for a Bassman OT with 16 ohm tap.

Cheers,

Paul.

When pulling two tubes your 4ohm output becomes an 8 and so forth.

OK I've got the picture now, thanks guys :D

Looks like the ideal solution would be the Prosonic, I'll see whether that is available in the UK, or the Bassman OT with a 16ohm tap, so I'll contact Heyboer. 4K primary impedance is what I'm looking for for a pair of 6L6's. I'm up to speed now.

OK fellas, what about the PT and choke?

I have checked Angela's and with the shipping, buying transformers from the USA is an expensive business, especially if you add on the duty and VAT, so I will try to source the parts here.

I have bought quite a few things from the States over the years ( just got some Texas Special pups) and it always works out pretty much the same. Our Post Office also charges us a handling fee on top of the other charges!

Allparts UK could be where I'm headed now! OR

Bluebell Audio stock Hammond, how about:

290 DEX PT

P-C194B choke

1760L OT

Well didn't ever hear back from Heyboer, so I went with the above set of Hammond iron from Bluebell Audio http://www.bluebellaudio.com/guitartransmain.htm

So far very good service and comms from Phil, he ordered the missing part 1760L from Canada and it should be with me next week.

1760L 4,200 C.T 4, 8, 16 this is the output - Bassman with the 16 ohm tap

Hope it all works out
