Convertible Amp
I've built probably 15 or 20 different amps but there is always something different I would like to try. It gets expensive biying transformer sets to build a whole amp everytime. So this time I am building a series of different power amps and a series of different preamps. Now when I wonder what this preamp would sound like with a different poweramp I can just plug the two together and see. So far I only have one power stage (4 X 6V6 with a Hiwatt style phase inverter) with 3 different preamps (Hiwatt 504 style, SSS/non hrm ODS style, and a Rivera style superchamp). Im working on an 18 watt 2 X EL84 and a 2 X 6V6 additional output sections

Re: Convertible Amp
Nice work tex! Love that Western style, used to live in Tucson myself. 44 magnum packs a real punch, I'd put that on a 100W power section too!
Re: Convertible Amp
Interesting concept.
I agree, if the last amp really doesn't do it for me I usually just change it to something else.

Re: Convertible Amp
How do you deliver DC? Does each pre and power amp have its own supply, or does the power amp power supply have a DC out for the pre?

Re: Convertible Amp
Filament power, B+, and 5 Volt relay power, are supplied from the power amp. In the top picture the Molex plug that supplies these power sources hasn't yet been plugged in, and can be seen hanging out the front.
