Dumble direction for Strat

Post by CHIP »

If I were to build a dumble type amp exclusively for a strat, what direction should I go?
I have a tweaked d'lite that I love for humbucking type guitars, but when I plug in my strat with Lindy Fralin pups it just doesn't cut it.
I've considered building a #124, Hrm 101, #40, ect.
Looking for suggestions.

Either style you do one of the things that I think helps is to add the OD entrance trimmer on the back.. I find that when going to the singles adding a touch more signal in the OD entrance helps thicken and smooth things a bit..Also the newer higher mu 12 AX's work great for Humbuckers and seem to handle the low end better..For Strat's I like the older type tubes RCA's Mullards. Funkins etc..Warmer less buzzy ..I know this doesn't help much if you switch thought I'd mention it for the full time Strat guy's..Both tubes and adjustable trimmer help..... for Strat I walk to the HRM first..

I agree about having the OD Gain Trimmer on the back panel.
I removed one of the speaker jacks and put it there.
What I ended up doing was use a 50KB pot, and a 2K7 resistor to ground.
What that did for me was put the desirable settings from 10:00 to 1:00.
I labeled it so the setting is the resistance from wiper to ground with a 20 25 30.( that is kilo ohms)
I put a chicken head knob on it so I can reach around and feel it if I can't see it.

Also having the mid cap switchable on the back panel is a cool feature to have.
You can have a .05uF mid cap on the board and a .01uF on the switch.
So the .05uF would help the strat and the .01uF for humbuckers.
I recently did this and like it a lot.

When the .01uF cap is in series with the .05uF the amp sees .0083uf.
If you need closer to .01uF you can use a .02uF
When the switch shorts out the .01uF the amp sees .05uF.

You can change the .01uF value around if you want to change the total C.

I labeled the switch FAT and THIN. :D

Thanks to all for the replies so far.

Tony,
About tubes, You're right, I'm using Electro-harmonics 12ax7EH in all 3 positions.

Would going with the ODS 101 HRM be a good build to try?
or #124?

I've wondered about the Strat thing and was thinking of doing a DPDT switch for the mid caps, but also putting a 100K slope on the board and being able to switch in a 50K in series on the other side of the switch, which would enable switching from Skyline to Classic stack. Has anyone tried this? I've read in posts that some Strat users like the 100K Classic slope better.

Cheers,
Paul.

Chip I don't know that's a tough one!!!.. some are partial to the clean channel of 124 100k's.. BUT!!.. like the OD of the HRM 101 for singles..I spend more time on the OD so my decision is biased more tword OD and I can still make the high plate clean of the HRM sound good enough for my needs...This is without getting into all the mods just stock.....So it really comes down to taste style and if at all compromise...Apples and Oranges!!

I personally think the high plates sound better on both clean and the OD stages.

One of my faves and most versatile of all of the Dumble designs IMHO is the Bluesmaster( w/ HRM on the front and the od trim on the back) w/ built in D-lator and padded megaboost.(That's a mouthful). This amp makes virtually everything I plug into it sound wonderful...I only built one of these for myself and won't do another.. Too time consuming.. I think Gary makes something real similar and yes BM and Strats/ Tele's goes very well together..
