OD section Robben Ford Dumble
Hi,
I searched in the forum topics for the RF dumble.
There are a lot of topics displayed.
Before I read all I think it better to ask for.
I guess anybody knows the answer directly without thinking about it.
What for type of overdrive section is in the RF dumble applied?
The Type with snubbers and without tone stack?
The Type without snubbers and ton stack?
Cheers
Manfred

Re: OD section Robben Ford Dumble
Here's the problem: RF is known to have had his amps modified by Dumble a number of times since the early 80's. If you think about it, very little is known because of this. They've been in very few hands, outside of RF's crew and HAD. You have to indicate which era/album you like to get an answer that's meaningful, and at that point, there's still a lot of conjecture. Beyond that, some of his better known cuts are not Dumbles. The song, 'Talk To Your Daughter,' is a Rivera...R100 iirc.

Thanks for the facts.
So I think I have to do with trial and error on modding to achieve that sound.

That same amp but in a black headshell or a green 1x12 combo.

The one I know had snubbers and no hrm stack, and otherwise was, as far as I remember now (was more then ten years ago) pretty standard eighties stuff. Choke, Twin OT, 6L6 and all. As I am still sure that it had the "deep" on the front, I am not even sure now if it was a Skyliner. But I just notice that I do more guessing here as I like myself. I'll check again as soon as I find the time and post the findings I feel free to post.stiltamp wrote:Hi,

Re: OD section Robben Ford Dumble
Hey Brandon, thanks for the nudge. I drifted away from Robben a few years ago. I'd listened to him from his Magic Sam, Y-J's and Blueline stuff etc period. So I'd not bought his few recent cds - except the Jing Chi discs - and he's been off my radar, search wise. Not sure i should be saying this with a player of his calibre. lolFunkalicousgroove wrote:I can't say whether or not it was then what it is now, but look at the Indicator light and toggle switch tips- all green
Your post made me have a quick 'google' and I was a year out, it was 1997. I found they'd made a concert of it in Germany and released it in 2008.
Amazon -Ford DVD
Best guitar sound I have ever heard live. The Holy Grail of tone - for me.
Re: OD section Robben Ford Dumble
Thats the magical question. Seeing him live then, and seeing him recently, his tones are completely different. I still feel he MAY have had NON HRM for TTYD, went to HRM for the middle years, and is now back to Non HRM.Tubetastic wrote:Anyone know what he was touring with around 95/96?
No one really knows about those middle years, which IMO, are his best tones. Not bright and piercing at all like now, and very very smooth. In any case, after owning many clones and playing sveral and finally buying an actual Dumble, similar tones can be had by almost all of the different types with the proper speakers, effects, and squashing with a D'ulator.

Re: OD section Robben Ford Dumble
He also used to borrow Jackson Brownes amp(s) and Steve Trovato's amp which IS HRM. It's hard to say really-

There's an RF website where one of his techs (David/Daved?) answers questions on a somewhat regular basis. He had his main ODS sent back to Dumble for changes about 1 and a half to 2 years ago. Apparently, it's love/hate relationship with his amp....keeps HAD in Cheetos.Tag wrote:Seeing him live then, and seeing him recently, his tones are completely different.
Question: When HAD works on one of his gooped amps, does he simply rip out the old board and start over, or de-goop it?

Re: OD section Robben Ford Dumble
The tan amp looked like it hadn't been touched in Decades, the Parts were all early 1980's The goo was black and had a hefty layer of dust on it. I think it's the Other amp he got in the 90's that he fights with.

When I pulled Blue goo out of LC's amps there was evidence of prior black goo, I think he just scrapes it off, only takes a couple hoursjaysg wrote:There's an RF website where one of his techs (David/Daved?) answers questions on a somewhat regular basis.
