Tonkerlite update

Post by odourboy »

For anyone who's been following the Tonkerlite discussion, I got mine on Friday and after giving it a bit of a break-in playing a looped backing track through it for 8 hours, I installed it in the target combo.

The combo cab isn't large - 19.5X18X8 deep. Rear mounted on a floating baffle. Oval opening on the back. Bottom line - I was disappointed. It was middy, lacked bass, and sounded a bit thin and boxy. No doubt, the cab was to blame. I took off the back panel and it 'opened up' the sound considerably. It actually sounded pretty good, but still lacked mid-deep bass... decent, but not enough balls. Next, I put it in a Thiele cab, front mounted. BIG DIFFERENCE! Bass filled out nicely. It actually sounded quite good in that cab. Only slightly less efficient than my EV-12L, brighter and slightly scooped in comparison.

So, unfortunately, it ain't likely to be going back into that particular combo cab (unless I maybe redo the front and rear panels for a vented design), but in the right box, it definitely has potential.

As always, YMMV. :D

Yes, I put a Delto Pro in a thiele cabinet. It sounds huge and fat, plenty of highs and sweet mids. I like it a lot, but I've yet to gig with it so the jury's still out.

Bob & Odourboy, are your cabinets the theile TL606 cabinet? I've been having this thought that I might like one of those cabinets.

Here is a link to all of them...

Hey RJ - did you mean the 806 - the 606 is for a 15".

2x606 used to be standard bass player issue back in the good-old-days.

Nickt is correct - it's the TL806 design, as per that link, that I'm using.

I have a Dumble-style combo for one of my ODS and use a Celestion G12H-100 with it. I did find the Bass quite a bit lacking compared with either the closed-back Dumble style 1x12 (EV) or the open back 1x12 (EV) I have.

Maybe somebody else could chime in and tell about their experience with the Dumble-style combo cabinets. Me thinks these designs do lack some low mid and bass.

Cheers,

Gents,

I'm going to have to revise my initial reaction to the Tonkerlite. I came back to it today with fresh ears on and did some serious A/B's with several other speakers including CRex, RW&B, Deltalite II, Weber Cali plus my 'reference' standards G12-65 and EVM 12L in their TL806 cabs. I aso used the Wizard Room EQ package (available FREE from Home Theater Shack!) to record responce charts to help me confirm what I was hearing.

The Tonkerlite in the open back configuration is really quite good. It doesn't quite have the precense and 3-D quality of my reference drivers in the TL806 cabs, but it did as well or better than the others I mentioned in the open back combo configuration. I'm going to leave it in the combo (at least for now).

I'm going to blame this on inadequate break-in for my initial round to tests

carry on...

Still following this thread to see how those Tonkerlites perform. I have a small combo that I really want to put in the trunk as a grab and go unit with one of those loaded. A few less pounds might give me better gas mileage :D

One more post on this topic. My Tonkerlite is really growing on me.

Inspired by Tag's 'Politician' challenge on the TPG, I just recorded this short demo of the Tonkerlite in my just completed Junk Pile Delight combo (as per a different thread). Recorded dry with some reverb and delay added in the mix. No EQ. Dimarzio Hot PAF in my Fat Strat bridge position. SM57. Backing track. Here it is (warts and all, for I am no pro!):

I installed the Jensen NEO12-100 in a small front ported 1x12 and tried it out yesterday with my pro reverb, and today I tried it with the ODS and it is killer IMHO. Lots of fat low end - nice smooth top and the mids seem just right. This is a sweet articulate very responsive speaker that has not seemed at all harsh yet.
Plus it handles 100Watts so I probably wont blow it up. It just replaced the nice old EVM12L that was in the 1x12 cab and the cab got about 10lbs lighter :D

I've never tried speakers with the Neo magnets so this should be interesting.
The weight reduction alone is attractive as I think these are only 4 ounces each!
I should get them Friday. :D
I'll be putting these in a 2x12 Lopo cab.

Nice clip Odourboy!
That amp/ speaker(s) sound killer!

Thanks Tom. Hope your T'lites work out for you. Make sure you give them a chance to break in before you judge them.
