Board material does effect the tone!! Personally I like what the Goop does to the sound...I like to have the option of tweaking something after the fact though.. If I get one perfect I'll goop it up...
Early on I rebuilt one of my Blackface Bassmans with a few small changes.. The tone was killer.. Later I found that Phenolic I used had sat in the basement absorbed some moisture and became conductive... I replaced it with the exact same components oriented the caps the same way even the resistors...and the amp didn't sound nearly as good...it was early on and I didn't realize.. I wish I had never changed that amp...Live and learn...

Of course, if you get the tweaks perfect and Goop does affect the sound, doesn't that pervert your previously perfected tweaks???

Having been in about 12 Dumbles now, some with goop, some without, some with formica, some with Fiberglass, I'm going to say that the formica was used because it was at hand, or because Apex or Fry's near Marmion BLVD in Los angeles had shorter length eyelets at the time Alexander was there.

I recently(in the last 2 weeks) took the goop out of a "Celerbrity" dumble, which Did not have the formica, and I played it before I removed the goop, and after- there is NO difference. I played it again after re-gooping it and there is NO difference.

I can say that if you plan to tweak your amp don't use the formica, it doesn't take the heat from the iron as well as G-10 and it cracks under pretty slight pressure.

The revelation for me came when we went to a PC design for our Fralin Model...Being a relatively simple design w/not much in the way of shielded wire.... switching ...etc.. it provided an honest assessment of the design/ component changes..The PC layout we did were designed as close to the eyelet boards as we could get...accept we ran the etches to the edge of the boards..The B+ ran on the opposite side down the length of the board and eyelets down by the power supply that's it.. No filter caps on the board.. From the edge of the board hand wired to the sockets pots etc...The difference in tone was quite noticeable.. Aside from the fact that the builds were more consistent which we all know PC boards do.. The amps had more head room...a crisper more focused tone and I would say an overall improvement....This is of coarse the extreme case and point and the difference between for-bond, phenolic and Formica are much more subtle...Where it's most noticeable for me is in the low end.. The for-bond (Gasket material) being the sloppiest...Least focused... Never tried the Formica..
Not that it matters but we took it a step further and designed boards for the Fralin that had the filter caps and pots for the tone stack mounted on the board...Those amps never left the shop!!!
