I replaced the JJ PI tube that came in my Overtone with a balanced EH Gold Pin 12ax7 and it smoothed things out a good bit. Then I put another gold EH in V2 and a Tungsram in V1. The biggest improvement came from the Tungsram in V1. Very tight/articulate and musical. Tried an EH gold in V1 and quickly went back to the Tungsram. Seems like slightly lower output but much more defined and smooth sounding.

It was mentioned in this thread that most JJ ECC803S are microphonic.
In my last build I put a JJ ECC803S into PI position. So far it survived a couple of rehearsals.
Can I expect the tube to be fine or is it likely that it will go microphonic over time?

Peace,

Thanks for you tip! :D

So far I didn't do any "tube optimisation". Will keep it in mind though to test a tung sol in the PI position.

Markus

Anyone have any info on the Mullard and TAD 803s? I saw a couple of brief notes, but that's all. TADs are selected tubes so they probably won't do the fireworks display. Mullard's I don't know anything about.

Is the JJ 803S just a long plate 12ax7?

I can't really find much of a description.

yes.

From tube depot
The JJ/Tesla ECC803s is a hi-performance 12AX7 that has a spiral wound filament to reduce noise and hum. The construction is different from the JJ ECC83 in that the plates are more conventional, but have a special heat dissipating fin that serves to improve efficiency and gain. The plates of the tube are also "over-sized" (longer) as compared to most standard 12AX7 tubes. This over sized plate structure improves details in the bass and low mid-range responses. If you want that great JJ tone in a hi-performance package, then these are for you.

It was originally one of the so-called 10,000 hour life preamp tubes that Telefunken and others produced back in the day.

I just put a couple of the ECC803s in 1 and 2 on my 70's build. So far I'm pretty happy with them. I had heard some concerns about long plates being noisy in the 2 (OD) position, but so far no problem.
And yes, they are just a long plate 12AX7.

I just received some TAD 803s but didn't have time to test them so far.

I'm wondering if the JJ 803's sounding good has anything to do with the test amp having an EL34 power section.

Did you compare the Tung Sol 6L6's to Winged C?
So far I just used the Winged C. A pair of Tung Sol's is still waiting on my bench to be tested :)

I have been testing the short bottle TungSols and have found some issues with them getting noisy and then KABOOM. I guess Alan Philips (CarolAnn) has seen the same issue. I will say while they lasted (< 15 hours) they did sound good. I have also tested the TS 5881's and found no issues. I not tested the large bottle TungSols.

But for right now, I will stick with WC's, expensive but never had any issues with them.

Think I will skip the test
"KABOOM" is kaboom in terms of pieces of glas flying around or kaboom in terms of just crapping out?
