What diodes are you using?
mostly 1N4007's

That will cut the signal way too much. Go get some 11 volt (1n4741) and 20 volt(1N4747A) zeners. If this is all you have..and you have 5...try the bridge rectifier style clipping..like in the JCM 900 after the 3rd gain stage.

I will have to try the zener diodes. This is all turning out to be a really fun mod to do :D

This statement really helped me to get closer to that better Dumble OD tone I have been chasing for a long time. I have a fender and the normal channel is a dumble preamp with the tremolo tube used for the OD. I have struggled with this for a long time to realize that opening up the V1 volume makes a huge difference in the tone. I have set up the clean channel and then dial in the OD. Now I'm convinced the OD should be set as Gil says with V1 Vol. up and then dial in the clean. On the other hand the clean from the reverb channel is to die for and so I try not to mess with that function and really just switch with an ab box from clean fender to OD channel 1. This makes me want to put a 1meg with a relay from pin 1 vol pot to ground to lift the v1 level with OD and back to Vol 1 gain in clean. Interesting.

Good idea you could alter the ground on the input pot..

Ground it in clean mode and lift it (whatever value sounds good in OD) put it on a relay that activates when you go to OD. :D

Tony
This what I have been doing....I lift the clean volume with a relay when I switch to OD. This alows me to set my clean volume where ever I want to. My OD tone is now independent of my clean setting.

In some amps I also switch to a trimmer to have a preset clean volume setting feeding the OD if I don't like the sound of the clean volume set on full.

Hi Dan,
Can you give a little more detail about this mod?

How does the OD (which is V1 + V2) get enough drive if the Clean volume is bypassed?

Tom. I think he is passing the full signal from V1a on to V1b when in OD mode instead of attenuating it with the V1 volume pot.

Maybe something like this? Both relays switched simultaneously allow a strong signal to enter the OD channel?

Thats what I'm doing next. Maybe a higher value than 220k but maybe just a 1meg trimmer. as mentioned in an earlier post.

All you really need to do in the example is put the 220k to terminal 1 of the pot with the other end(of resistor) to ground and relay across the resistor. That way there is no bounce to ground (I think), and requires only a simple single pole relay.

Ditto that, and Jose clippers....fear not the diode clipper. Pick the type of diode and series resistor correctly, and it ain't bad.

Heresy! Stay away from diode clipping and never look in my amps.

to each his own.

I hear you. I usually have V1 and gain at 9- 10 O clock. Maybe something else is not quite right and the amp is lower in gain than it should be?? Mullard preamp tubes are VERY gainy in Dumbles, I use lower gain GEs or chinese. Here is my Quinn 183 clone doing a HEAVY Sabbath tune (Into the void) with V1 and gain at no more than 12 Oclock. (Chinese 12Ax7s) Its at least as much gain as Iommi uses, and that is pretty up there in the gain department IMO.

I love that tone too. Its amazing how wide rage a dumble is. It sounds like hot pickups on the guitar. What are they.

I have an old set of G12H30s and always go back to them.
