Here's a little write-up about the two. I don't know if it will answer all the questions, but it's worth reading.

And you're right getting the trimmer just right makes all the difference. When I first built mine I didn't put anything on the trimmer to keep it put once I found the sweet spot and it would move I guess from vibration. Now I put some loctite on it and it stays.

Re: Compressor? Yea or Nay?
Alright I bought two boards from Chris. Gonna build both compressors (Dyna and Ross) and see what I like more.
Anyone know where I can find some CA3080's? I don't think I have any in my parts bins (I'm going to double check when I get home). Anybody want to trade for something or just give me a few?

They are getting kind of scarce... http://store.americanmicrosemiconductor ... 4AodaRxoxw
The board I got from Chris is drilled for 8-pin DIP, and so can use either TO5 or DIP.

The DIP's are still pretty cheap... it's the metal cans that are typically $8-$12.

Ahh, I see. The dips are on ebay for around a dollar in quantity.
Maybe I'll hang on to these, you know, to pay for my retirement.
Double Holy Crap! I just checked eBay for some other chips I have.
CEM3340, $75!
SSM2040, $50!
Who would have known that synth chips would be such a good investment. Too bad I don't have a large inventory of these.

Re: Compressor? Yea or Nay?
Funny that I never considered a compressor on a Dumble before. I haven't used one for years, since I was playing a Twin I modded back on the 70's.
I pulled the old Boss CS-3 out of hiding and I've been piddling with it ever since. Very cool tones can be found in there.
One sound I'm liking is very little compression, some gain boost, and punch up the highs with the amp on Jazz, bass 10:00, mids 11:00, Treble 3:00 and a Les Paul with P-90s. I never thought I'd get a clean snap outta a Dumble like this ... just awesome

Re: Compressor? Yea or Nay?
I played with compressors for years, long time with an old Dynacomp in front of Peavey solid state stuff, and plenty through Fender amps also.
The dynacomp is a fast attack, very slow release unit, so it really clamps and holds on. Almost all 70s country stuff is heavily dynacomped, and heavy compression is the still the dominant tone in that field.
I used a Line 6 compressor for a while, but it was too rough sounding, added too much itself.
More recently I've used a Boss CS3 with am Optimod Plus mod, which seems to really smooth it out. I like this unit a lot, much more flexible than the dynacomp, which is pretty much a one trick pony, though a classic trick.
All this being said, all the little compressors are designed to emulate the sound of the "natural" compression you get from a tube amp pushed hard, and were used in an effort to have some "squish" without having to play real loud.
None of them sounds as good as the compression you get from D type amp working well.
That's how compression is supposed to sound, to me.
As always, great thread on this board!

So no CA3080 help from anyone? I don't have any laying around and didn't want to wait 2-3 weeks for some to arrive from China..

If these are what you want, I get stuff from here all the time. He usually get's stuff sent out in 2 to 3 days and will use USPS so shipping should be about $5. In fact I should be getting any order today. Very trustworthy.Cliff Schecht wrote:So no CA3080 help from anyone?
