Re: SSS - Nukular Warhead - Chassis are Finished
I sold another one of these off to the great white north last month. I expect we will see some photos from that. I am still dragging my feet but have every intention of building this amp.
Mark did you sell yours or are you still going to build?

Still building the SSS rj,
Just getting things in place to draw out how I want to proceed with this project based off different circuits. In otherwords my own way of throwing an amp together.
I have quite a few more amps to build before I come back to this one, but am slowing getting parts together.

Great White North here! Will be winter before I get into this one probably, will be 150W w/Hammond 278CX PT and NOS Bassman 100 OT, 4x7581A or 6550, depends on which sounds better. 520 plates, 510 screens, we shall see.

Jelle,
That photo might just be the kind of inspiration that will get this project moving again for us. Your work looks really nice!
Having more guys working on these amps is quite welcome since we can all probably learn and benefit from the collective exercise. I think that adding David Root to that collection of builders is really an extra plus since he tends to finish stuff at a top notch level - maybe he will pass along a little education in clean amp technology 101 as these all come together. Welcome aboard sir.
For my SSS build I am planning to use some over-sized Edcor iron. I bought a set of 100 watt transformers for an ODS build last year with a power tranny secondary rated to be 320-0-320. What I hadn't considered was that Edcor rates their transformers using a "loaded" voltage rating. In reality when this tranny is not working especially hard it makes more like 342-0-342 on the secondary. That was a little hot for my ODS but should put me about where I want to be with the SSS. Edcor tends to be pretty conservative in their ratings so I think the output will work out excellent for a big clean amp.
I haven't decided on tubes for sure but I like KT-66's and if not those then a quad of 6L6GC's.
The Edcor output iron is getting stellar reviews especially in the 100 watt Dumble style builds. I am really looking forward to building the big clean beast although it's still not clear that I will ever get to turn it up and play.

Jelle,
I still have that old email from you with your link to that amp, its a great looking amp. I love the suede.
I still plan to follow as much of the discussion on TAG to built my SSS but as I previously told you, I will probably stick closer to Twin Reverb PI and four 6L6.
Your builds are an inspiration Jelle, I really think you should post a whole bunch of gut shots of that SSS

Re: SSS - Nukular Warhead - Chassis are Finished
Anyone thought about making those Hi-Low filters like in Super Twin Reverb ? Do it as 4-5 extra pots with concrete frequencies (something like mesa graphic eq) with ability of disconecting this element ? Could be interesting.
Re: SSS - Nukular Warhead - Chassis are Finished
Wicker interesting idea but I plan to go with the two switches and attached the layout for those from an older post from someone (txbluesboy). EDIT
rj, those Edcor trannies would be ideal for the SSS I agree and I have been very happy with the ones I had built for me. But I am using up the last of them in another ODS build 100 watter.

I reconed the 2 EVM12L's that came in my donar Peavey Mace.M Fowler wrote:So has anyone made any head way with their SSS
Sounds like a stock Mace now... boring and too loud.
I wanta make it a master of all amps, Clean, OD, Filters, Loop, Reverb, and at least 5,000 watts... ok, 160 but I gotta figure how to tame her.
Re: SSS - Nukular Warhead - Chassis are Finished
Bob I was reading your post on that and going with the 12BH7 SVT style would be a good direction as well.

Re: SSS - Nukular Warhead - Chassis are Finished
That reminds me, Andy Fuchs uses a 6FQ7 as the driver in his Clean Machine. This is basically a 6CG7 without the internal shield. It is higher current than a 12AT7 but lower than a 12BH7.
He probably picked the 6FQ7 because they cost less than the 6CG7, but other than that I am wondering what he saw in it that he liked for this application.
RJ, thanx for the kind words, but I'm just another pilgrim on the Great Tone Road, learning more each day.

You are welcome, I posted it to tease you a bit and I hope you don't mind. Honestly, I wonder if you are just in love with the idea of building one.RJ Guitars wrote:Jelle,

I know this: these amps only work well with certain players. Why go through the trouble if you are not going to use it?

For anyone that want to read something more about filters, I highly recomend Radiotron Designers Handbook, you can find it here:

lots of information, chapter 15 - tone filters.
