How about polystyrene caps, as either treble or plate snubbers? I have poly OD snubbers in my Dumbleized 6SL7 amp.
Polystyrene caps are much more efficient at amplifying those higher frequency's to my ears...5k-10k range so if you want some serious sparkle on a fender clean style amp with single coils 100pf bright cap goes a very long way..Iv'e never tried them as coupling caps and don't think they would sound good...

Anybody ever try the CORNELL DUBILIER (CDE) Polyester film caps?

http://www.newark.com/cornell-dubilier/ ... dp/66K2042

Also in regards to the ceramic snubber caps on V2,
Am I right in that a snubber cap on a preamp tube is to smooth the tone a bit?
What effect does going larger with the value bring?
Say I have 270pf in there now, if I changed these for 390pf, what would I notice?

Thanks

BTW, here is a pretty good article on using snubbers on a SS power supply.

They take some high end off. increasing the snubber values makes a very small but noticable difference in tone and usually warms it up a bit.

I like to use "uneven" snubbers, i have a 330pF on V2a and a 680pF on V2b. IMO this gives a nicer tone rolloff and givesthe amp more "chirp" definition
It's true i've lost my marbles and i cant remember where i put them

I went from 270pF to 680pF, on OD1 and OD2, both polystyrene. Because I'm using a 6SL7GT in parallel in place of each 12AX7 triode, the Zout is so much lower because the 6SL7 in parallel has a 22K plate resistance vs. 62.5K on a single 12AX7 triode (approximately) and so you have to boost the puffs to get the treble rolloff point.

Nice and smooth, especially on the bridge pickup, but needs a little bit of treble boost on the neck and more on the middle position, unless cranked out. There is a sweet spot out there and I'm getting close. 75.4K to ground off the 310K OD entrance trimpot (nominal 350K, not even close) with a 120K prior resistor and a 33K makeup resistor to ground off the trimpot.

I think I have...

Check the blue skinny bass cap in the TSC and in the PI as well.

Thanks guys.
Yeah, I've been trying to read up on snubbers or puffs as they are sometimes called.
I thought I had read that they help take off the fizz on the OD and smooth the top end.

So if I increase the 270pf ones I have now, say to 390pf will it shave more top end off or less? I'm thinking more.

I wish I knew how to run that SPICE program but listening is always best.

Maybe I'll tack a few different values in there and listen.

Something I read, can't remember where now, was how much the lead length on caps can change the capacitance, especially on the ceramic disc caps.
But what I don't understand is even if the leads are kept short, wouldn't the wires soldered to them do the same thing?

Jelle,
Those sure look like the ones in my link.

May I ask why you would use those in the locations they are instead of orange drops?
Or did you just happen to have them at hand?
Very nice looking build!

I believe 'puff' is just slang for pF, so any small cap measured in pF could be called a puff. 'Snubber' describes their function. ;)

Ah, that makes sense, thanks.

I too can't seem to find the Panasonic X5F ceramics.
Mouser only had those in the larger pf range.
