Overdrive Reverb Q's

Post by dr. who »

I looked at the pics of the ODR that Santana had made for him in 2007 and I started getting curious. Can any of the 4 clean channels(Classic, Skyliner, Bluesmaster, or Ripper) be used in the ODR and sound good? Also can the OD be Standard, HRM, or Megaplex in them?

I'd imagine you could use any of them, however the increased bass response in the Bluesmaster and Ripper may make for Boomy Reverb sounds-

Is there any new information about the ripper version 1, ripper version 2, megaplex OD version 1, and megaplex OD version2?

AFAIK the breakdown of what the "Ripper" consists of:

The clean side is a high plate "Bluesmaster" Voicing, Overdrive has an HRM tonestack and a Post Cathode Follower (ala Marshall), The PI is of the "Bluesmaster" kind

So megaplex OD is HRM tonestack and a post cathode follower?

This is not based on a real amp. Just a schematic I drew up for discussion purposes only . Schematic probably has errors and values may not be appropriate.

Is this what you are referring to regarding the topology being sort of Marshall OD?

I don't have any info that hasn't been discussed in this forum, but I believe that a Ripper only has one overdrive stage + cathode follower. In essence, the circuit w/ PAB resembles a Marshall 2203 preamp. I wonder what the interstage network between V1B and V2A is. Anyone care to share that bit of info? :D :D :D :D

I built this amp for a friend out of an old Bogen. I thought it sounded pretty good and my friend liked it.

It has an OD section with one gain stage and a CF.

Just a couple of more ideas to consider ............
I have NOT built these.

Having an onboard FX. I did not draw it with the LNFB because I don't care for the LNFB in the FX. Wired in series like this, it could be used as sort of another gain stage with a gain pot. Or it could be wired to have parallel/series switching.

And I found this schematic that I drew up and had forgotten about. I'm thinking I may have drawn the LCOD one in 3/'11 or sometime in 2010?

CHECK for errors of course. There are editable versions here:

I have had this OD in my (now favorite) amp for several months now, and the tone is very close (if not exact) to the Carlton tones Brandon linked earlier in the thread.
It has the option of just 1x gain stage into the CF/HRM stack, or the ability to footswitch in the 2nd preceeding gain stage for the next level of OD.

This is the best circuit I've built or played, but be warned that it takes much time tweaking to get it "right".

Also, my V1 in the clean section is a 5879 pentode.....basically the "HoSo56" preamp that was developed over @ the Hoffman forum.

I use verb & delay in the loop (thru a Kleinulator), and it's not "boomy" at all (as was suggested might be possible earlier in the thread). I find myself playing the thing for hours....very inspiring!
