It is designed to be used with a simple high pass filter that actually peaks the bass by +dB (cheby filter). This gives an additional octave of low end response with that sized cabinet. So they roll off cabinet to protect the speaker and then boost the signal to increase the bass. Of course it does come at the penalty of phase changes in the lower octaves.
I went for a different box volume (larger) and tuning and ended up with a cabinet design with a -3dB (measured) at 65 Hz. Good enough for geeetar .
EV speakers are flat hard to beat. I have two EVM 15B's that have been at least 10 different PA cabinets (folded horns, horn loaded, bass reflex, infinate baffle etc etc etc) over the past 28 years. They currently reside in a custom 2 way bass reflex and still sound awesome.

I'll second that, at least for bass. Best bass tone I've EVER heard live was this band called the Heroin Shieks. It was (I think) a 70s SVT into two of the 15" version of the TL806. Sweet.

After I blew up my bass players ampeg svt15 cab with my MusicMan hd65 I built the tl808 cab, as I happened to have an EVM15L lying around. Personally I think it is much more rounded than the ampeg, with great punch, better mids and cleaner highs. For guitar, not so much though, just overwhelmingly deep, although if you had a really bass anemic amp... but my pedal steel rig seems to get along quite well with it.
Here's a pic of the finshed cab. I tried out the Herculiner stuff since Pep Boys had it on sale. I only used one coat of the stuff...I thought the texture would be too aggressive. I sprayed a second coat with the non textured stuff. I'm pissed at the crooked grill cloth. but, oh well.
The ipod was full with the complete Booker T & the MG's discogrophy, so I patched it in to the input of my Lab L5 and turned it up and left for the day to break in my speaker. I sure hope some of that Memphis soul found it's way in there Seriously, it does sound great. I've tried it with my 50W non HRM amp, and it definitly brings something different to the game vs my 4X10 combo. Not really better per se, I mean I still dig the 4x10 closed back combo with the Emi Legends, it's just hard to describe. Obviously it's got better punch, but the clarity is diiferent as well. I like it
If anyone here is interested my cabinet shop can make the 806 to spec un- covered for $130.00 + shipping.. Here are a few pictures of a 1 x 12 ported cab I recently built for a friend of mine. It is loaded with a EVM 12L and the wood is nicely figured African Mahogany with some Black Limba trim around the front edge.
I have built several of these cabs and the thing that really surprised me was the cab sounded much bigger than a single 1 x 12 I had ever heard..
