I'm not crazy about ordering tubes from CE, they don't do triode matching and in the case of 12AX7's it's almost like they only send you ones that have already been picked over by some other company because they seem to be drastically not matched.
Re: Heyboer transformers it's hard to beat their power transformers, I've done side by side comparisons with the Mercury equivalents and if anything the Heyboer's run cooler at the same current draw. Plus you can almost buy 2 of them for the price of 1 Mercury. I'm with you on the output transformers though - Mercury's are better, right out of the gate and then seem to go up from there over time. I really don't understand how an output transformer can get better with age but the Mercury's seem to...

Weird. I order from CE almost weekly. I get every order within 4 days - Seattle area. Been dealing with them since long before I was into amp building and always had the same fast service....
I've had Heyboer do 2 different custom PT's for me. Both one-offs. Had them in less than 10 days both times. Only times I've dealt direct with them and they treated me like a regular...
Only ordered from Hoffman a couple of times and it showed up FAST!!!

Re: Weber Speakers is it me!!!
Early on in Weber's designs, he was trying for extremely tight tolerances. The machine shops couldn't deliver reliably. He relaxed a lot of those tolerances a few years back after realizing he couldn't get what he wanted. So maybe the problem with voice coil rub, etc. was in the 4 years and older models. Also, the no doping on the cones results in a livelier speaker, but it sure increases the voice coil rub and "wolf howling" tones. I just can't abide that. All of my speakers have more dope than many others they make, just for that reason. Going with light or no dope, you better not be hitting that speaker with max volume, or OD pedals cuz that's what causes the cone to get out of control, and that's what doping does, dampens the vibration a bit so they are more stable under peak transients, OD boosts, etc.
I know I've got tolerances on the Scumbacks similar to the old Pre Rola's, which is because I sent Ted a few dead ones to autopsy which helped in the creation of the Scumbacks.
As for problems with TA, and Ted...maybe I'm just respectful of the fact that there are always going to be suppliers that can't always hit their deadlines due to other factors...weather, someone forgot to order a critical part, price increases (magnets, cones, frames and shipping in the last year alone) from sub contractors, whatever.
Whenever I've had a problem, TA & Ted have been responsive to me. Then again, I've only 14 speakers that were bad in four years out of over 5000 shipped, so that's a pretty low percentage. I realize my speakers are a specialty thing, though, and it takes five times as much labor to make mine as their pre rola versions (My Tone models), so I'd guess the extra labor results in fewer issues.
At this point, my orders are down to about a 2 week timeframe, plus shipping, so they're usually here in 3 weeks with shipping, which I don't feel is outrageous. It used to be 4-6 weeks four years ago, but that's improved once they ramped up staff and production.
I've had maybe 3-4 issues in four years, all resolved amicably and fairly quickly, so I've got no gripes with them. Of course, I'm probably one of their better clients, so that may be a factor as well.
I'm not saying that hobbyists, and retail clients haven't had problems at times, but the cab thing I know was a supplier to Weber that screwed them over, they waited like 3-4 months for cabs that were supposed to be there in 3-4 weeks, and then the supplier shipped sub standard cabs, then bailed, impossible to find. So that one is a circumstance of a subcontractor being the problem, not TA & Ted. I know they had to switch to Mojo on quite a few of those orders just to get them processed and it cost them more due to shipping, etc. So they didn't win on that cab deal from 3 years back, that's for sure.
As with any business, there will be problems, and it's a case of if you can roll with it, or you have to bail and find another source. Only your patience, and time constraints can dictate that, of course.
Hope this explained a few things.

Is that you? Thanks for the post.. I remember the cabinet dabockile..
We got some cabs in around that time that were well kind of rough... some I had to re-tweed...As for turn around times on speakers... For a retail sale 3-4 weeks is not too bad but for a manufacturer waiting 3-4 weeks on an order of 5 speakers is too long for me!! Sorry!!!..
Henry
The only preamp tubes I get anymore are the JJ's and apart from the occasional dud I've been pretty happy with them.. Just to see I'll test my next several orders and see how they read... Thanks for the tip...

Yep, it's me. I got one of those effed up cabs with an amp kit I ordered, and Ted replaced it for me, it was so bad. Then he told me what happened with the cab builder (I think two different ones, actually) then he went to Mojo to fix it all.talbany wrote:Jim

Turnaround times on speakers has been cut in 1/2 in 4 years, I know that for sure. My 12/30 order arrives here on Thursday, the 22nd. My first order of speakers placed on 12/10/04 arrived late January, 2005, so they've gotten much better.
Delivery times
CEDIST is always 5 days, they ship the same day but UPS takes 5 days to ship from Arizona to NY. If you check their shipping maps it is a matter of zones. Mouser ships the same day as well but they are in Texas(I think) which is a closer zone and it only takes 2-3 days. On behalf of CEDIST, they always ship very quickly, depending on the time of day you place your order, the order is usually packed and ready for shipping in 1-2 hours. I have called there 30 minutes after placing an order to add to it and they have already packed and processed the order. Point is I think it is the shipping companies, not CEDIST.
