Adding some info about my journey and discoveries.

I had a properly biased FET circuit on one of my amps, and the external pot to control it at 10 o'clock was about unit level. I never was a big fan of how this circuit sounded and also never found a good use for so much boost.

This time around I set the bias very very cold, with voltages across the 10K resistor (per biasing method) as 3.7V and 17V. In such low gain configuration the pot at maximum is unit level. I really love how this circuit sounds now, specially with the SSS amps. It rolls off treble, focuses the sound and adds some nice harmonic distortion and overtones. Adds an extra dimension to the SSS circuit and I find it way more usable.

Lindley was an OD type guy and I assume his FET might be set somewhat similar? The schematic shows 8.8V and 6.5V, so not really properly biased as well
