I would need longer screws to convert it to a Z-mount, and the only time I ever tried to change the screws in a xfmr I found that they did NOT want to come out, and I thought I would be ruining the xfmr. How difficult is it to change this? FYI- the xfmr is a NOS Stancor.
They are dipped in beeswax, and occasionally wrapped in a fabric called fishpaper. Why I don't know. I've driven them out. If somebody can tell me why they are dipped I'll take them back out and do it.

I am going to my sheet metal guy's place on Monday, I can see if he can stamp you out a plate.

If it were me, having spent that much on the chassis, and as much time as it takes to build one of these I don't think I'd try to "Rig" it to save a few bucks.

I can get you a standard PT without the extra windings and such for $70 plus s&h.

If you can get that plate that would be excellent! I won't worry too much about the xfmr either way, but I'll let you know re: the xfmr when I order the chassis.

Thanks MUCH for your help!

I've taken many a transformer apart with no ill effects but the beeswax or resin must be for eliminating any sympathetic vibration that could result in an oscillation that could be detrimental without being heard. It does make for a good thread locking compound and turns the screw heads into security screws 8) .

I find it odd that they use beeswax since it actually ABSORBS moisture, seems that would be the opposite of what you would want to seal your Iron???

+1. Makes sense, just like potting a guitar pickup. If you don't control the vibration, transformers will generate unwanted output. You can exploit this to your advantage. Ever wonder why old pickups, and tranny's sound different (better in cases) than the new stuff? I wonder if sympathetic vibration has a lot to do with it. I have often wondered what effect the proximity of the amp (tubes, tranny's, reverb can mostly) to the speaker has on the tone/sustain of an amp. I would think it is similar to how a note will sustain from a guitar when the guitar is close to the speaker (although I can't really imagine the tranny generating enough voltage on it's own to be heard, unless it influenced neg feedback somehow). I think tube vibration and the reverb can vibrating would contribute a good bit to the sound in a combo though. Listen to the lead on the title song on SRV's Texas Flood album. You can hear some feedback that I swear is internal to the amp or between the amp and speaker. It sounds like it is coming from the reverb being driven by the speaker. I have never heard anything like that before or since.

I wind pickups occasionally and I once wound this really great sounding one for the bridge in one of my Strats. Then i thought, I better pot this or it MAY feedback. After I potted it, the tone was way different. It became sterile and brittle sounding. I thought I had shorted something, but it measured the same dc resistance before and after the potting process. It just lost all the warmth. I was so bummed! Now when I wind pickups, I only pot them very lightly so that some of the windings are still able to respond to vibrations. It really makes a difference. I would love to know if anyone has done similar tests with output transformers.
