Are ther any opinions about the neodym(or how do you spell it)speakers?
How are they in comparison to the EVM 12L or the G 1265.
Or is there no comparison?
I can`t try them out in my region but am very curious.

Hi,

I have heard that John Mayer uses the Neodym speakers (jensen??) and I have tested them and they certainly sound that way!

Totally agree on Dogears comment of the G1265! But the EVM is fun too...

I'd love to hear an Altec once....anyone in the NY region?!?

I have a reissue EVM12L. Sounds like the old ones. Very nice, but I much prefer the Celestion G1265.

Robben's sound recorded in the studio is fantastic. His live and recording setups are a bit different. The EVM 12L is a more accurate speaker for Robben's tone recorded in the studio.
If you are building an amp to sound similar to Mr. Fords recording rig, a EVM 12L a very good pick.
I own the Dumble #84 amp and have tried many different speakers, nothing comes close to the EVM 12L

Paul,

I totally disagree. Not even close.... First off, the Live Jing Chi Robben tone is one of the grails. Not EVM.

I have a bunch of studio shots and in them Robben is usually micing his boxes. In the earlier days he had a closed back 4X12 Marshall box. No EVMs.

EVM speakers are great, but I really do challenge anyone to come over and do some speaker testing here. The EVM is certainly good, but in no way is it the best. Alexander himself is very fond of the G1265. That comes to me direct from Celestion.

Not to be a prick (really...I know are a cool guy), but please record your #84 and EVM and see how close you come to everyones favorite Robben tones. I spoke to Alan P and he told me about how your amp sounds (very nice btw) but not so Fordish from how it was described. Someday when I am visiting Boston, maybe we can get together.

Well, I know for a fact by personal conversation with HAD that he favored the Altec 417-C. Many of the builds I have seen have the 417-C or the last 417 black back shown in the cabinet shots. The EVM-12L was a cheaper speaker and was only resorted to because the Altec became unavailable.
But every build was custom, am I right? So if HAD chose to build an ODS today with a G1265 he'd voice it for that speaker. If he chose a Jensen neo, that's what he'd voice it for. The Altec 417 series is again available from the folks (employees) who bought the factory fixtures and equpment when the new Altec dumped the professional audio line. I think they're bucking the tide though with Emenence producing such a wide range of fine speakers for so cheap.

This is getting controversial :D

Maybe I'll just call the two-rock guys to see if that's what John uses. This isn't the first time I've heard the two-rock/RWB thing. How much do you all think there is to it?

I wish there was a way to hear the celestion. How do you guys end up auditioning them? Do you have to buy then sell?

Yup, unless you are a well known player and the manufacturer fronts you a couple for audition.

I think dogears used to like the EVM-12L as his #1 until the RWB came along, now the G1265. Man o man, they are all three GREAT speakers. How could a guy go wrong?

He may have tried the G1265's, but I believe he did not record w/ them. The EV's are it as the Altecs sound a bit bright for his tastes.

I have played through a few 90's Dumble amps and every one is slightly different in tone, as each amp is customized to the customer’s specs.

My amp will attain the Robben sound easily, if played through a 4X12 Cabinet. Alan & I played my amp (1X12 EV combo) w/ a Strat (single coils). We played through humbuckers only for a very short time through my combo at the end of the day. Alan’s opinion would be a bit deferent if played through the 4X12 and adjusted the amp accordingly.
The amps that I have played, have a wide tonal spectrum, and can be adjusted by the EQ and speakers (1X12 open/closed back) or 4X12 (closed back), EV's, Altecs ect...

The reason I like the EV 12L, is that with all the different Dumble amps that I have played and listened, w/ different speaker arrangements, the EV12L has done best to bring out the tone of the amp. I am not stating that the G1265 is a bad speaker, but compared to other speakers in Dumble amps, it will not be as good as the EV12L to my ears.

Alan should be over soon, if I can get him away from his bench, building awesome amps for the folks out there, and he can be your ears for that Ford Sound. I cannot reproduce on a recording my live sound w/ the amp. Recordings can be made to sound great, but that is not what I am looking to do.
Its best to hear it live, or better yet, play through it loud!

Dogears, what is your first name? I feel it is not right calling by that name. You are more than welcome when in Boston to play my amp.

Wow, I just checked the price on the EV speaker, and the price puts it beyond my interest.

Jim,

Used EV 12L's are about $100. Best value for a high end speaker. The new EVM's speakers are priced too high.

CAUTION!!! OPINION TO FOLLOW. YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY.

Hi guys, I love ebay. I buy and I sell all the time. I've bought two Altec 417-C and two Altec 418-B guitar speakers on Ebay. All 4 were advertised as working when removed. The question to ask is why remove them then?

Hmmmmmm

After re doing them at Great Plains Audio I'll have enough in them to have bought myself new ones.

Whatever man

Not EVMs on my fave Robben recordings..... That is 100% fact. Don't get me worng, the EVM is a fantastic speaker! But, I just really prefer my vertical 2X12 with floating baffle and rear oval port. Loaded with Heritage G1265!

Paul, check your PM. I just shot you a message.

Excerpt of Robben live, using Dumble and 2X12 loaded with G1265. Tele on this one. Clearly HRM. No doubt to my ears. Enjoy!
