Re: Hook Up Wire Voltage Rating (300v?)
I noticed the wire Dumble used in the amps from the 70s and 80s all looks like the same wire and it does not have any writing on it. The insulation thickness definitely does not look like 600v but looks slightly thicker than 300v. In newer amps he seems to use a lot of style 1007 including Tweedle D. I think a lot of builders go through their "wire mojo" phase, so bear with me while I go through mine.

I've been wondering about Dumble's hook-up wire too.
For my two ODS builds, I used a combination of UL1007/TR-64 300V for the pre side and Alpha part no. 1563, 1000V for the PS and whatnot (BTW, it has no writing on it). It works great for me and is MIL-W-76B type MW.

Thanks Ultra. You build some great looking(and I am sure great sounding) amps. I am curious, the high voltage wire in the photo of your amp does not seem to have much of a thicker insulation than the wire coming off of the preamp board. Is that the 1000v wire that you referenced? Also do you mind if I ask what make of style 1007/TR-64 do you like and your source for both your referenced wires?

Yes, that's the 1563/1000V wire. You can see in the pic you posted the blue screen leads are 1563, as are the yellow and red going to the rectifier/bias PCB and standby switch respectively. I can't remember, but I may have used it for the plates and cathodes of the pre and for the heaters as well! It has the same insulation thickness (0.016"), insulation diameter (0.064") and PVC insulation material as the TR-64 stuff. Of course, it's also 20AWG with a solid core conductor. I got mine from Mouser, try searching part#: 602-1563-100. They're running low on stock as are Newark/Element 14. Digi-Key and Allied Elec are all out.
The UL1007/TR-64 wire I used for my amps are a blend of Alpha brand (Mouser part#: 602-3053/1-100) and McMaster-Carr wire. The spools I acquired from them were of the Consolidated brand (http://products.conwire.com/item/07-vw- ... c-wire/811)
For TR-64 wire, you can also try Weico wire (https://www.weicowire.com/) which I think Brandon at Bludotone used at one point and General Cable/Carol Brand which I've seen Two Rock use(http://catalogs.generalcable.com/Viewer ... #?page=176). Search Digi-Key for "2028A".
I'm still trying out different types of wire and I don't know if I like one over the other. So far, it's been a kind of "use-whatever's-at-hand-approach" because, quite frankly, I have no clue what the D-meister used.
Speaking of wires, here's a pic of the underside of the pre board before I installed it.

Thanks again Ultra! I have a box of the Consolidated wire from McMaster Carr that I will use up and then try some other stuff. I have never checked out Wieco, it looks like they have a lot of good stuff. Very tidy underside of your preamp board. I am going to assume since none of the wires are crossing that you use a backing board also.

For some reason when I see pictures of UltraHookedOnPhonix amp builds, I find myself grinning how good it looks.
It's a great example of construct as well as lead dress in every manner.
It is a very good example of workmanship.

Hey, thanks Tom! You're work is not so shabby either.Structo wrote:For some reason when I see pictures of UltraHookedOnPhonix amp builds, I find myself grinning how good it looks.

I haven't built anything D-related since 2011. Hopefully I'll be able to return, and when I do...
On the topic of hook-up wire, I think it might have been Brandon/Funkalicousgroove who turned me on to the 1000V, "type mwc" wire when he wrote:
It's halfway down the page here: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... light=1090Type mwc is a good choice, mil spec PVC jacket 1Kv rating.
Belden 8529 is MIL-W-76C but kind of hard to come across: http://www.belden.com/techdatas/metric/8529.pdf
Funk also mentions further down on the same page:
A bit confusing as I haven't been able to find any UL AWM/STYLE "1090".hookup wire was either Solid style 1090(300v pvc)...

Re: Hook Up Wire Voltage Rating (300v?)
Ultra I read Brandon's post mentioning style 1090 awhile back also and thought maybe that was a typo and that he meant style 1007. I have not been able to find any style 1090 either and the UL rating is the same as style 1007 just at a slightly higher temperature. Ooops, style 1009 is rated the same with a slightly higher temperature, style 1090 is used in electric blankets.
