If you think about it, it kind of makes some sense gradually increasing gain throughout each stage..Trimmer 25-30k, Drive around 40-50k OD master around 60-70k...Dumble tone

BTW..If I am in a situation where I can crank the amp I prefer to back off the Drive a bit and raise the OD master :D

This is cool info Tony
never thought of it this way
Thanks....
Would this be the same for most D style's ?
Just wondering about the larger audio pots(drive, level) used in the 183 circuit.

183 uses 30% audio taper pots in both drive and levels..So at noon would roughly be 75k (depending on pot taper) so in this respect they are still rather similar until you get up around 2 oclock that the gain increases dramatically vs a B taper which comes in much faster like Gil mentioned earlier
IMO I think he is using the 250k's in 183 more to manipulate tone than gain..
I hope this makes some sense!!

Appreciate it Tony
FWIW...not using 30% taper pots... I have my OD trim set at 23k...setting the drive around noon(30k)
and level at 1:00(64k) is sounding good so your"gradually increasing gain throughout each stage" theory makes sense to me.
I'm sure a lot of variables come in to play,
but its a cool way of measuring the gain structure/path...pot and trimmer wise.

I'd like to give this thread a bump as I'd love to try some new settings out, too!!

OK, I built a 100w ODS clone a couple years back as well as a Dumbleator.

In my humble opinion the D'lator is a very necessary piece of equipment,
in conjunction with the amp.

It allows you to turn up the preamp and master volume of the amp in such a way
that you get into the sweet area of operation of the amp.

The D'lator I built has three pots:
Send
Return
Output

It is the Output pot that saves the day.

You can run your preamp gain on the amp up around 1:00 and the master up around 2:00-3:00, what ever sounds good.

So then the Output pot on the D'lator becomes the actual master volume control of your rig.

I'm not saying that you can't get a ODS amp to sound good without a D'lator,
but you will have more control over the volume and tone with one at lower sound levels.

That is why most recommend that you build the 100w version because even turned
down there is more girth and mass behind the tone than with a 50w or so amp.

My 2 cents.
Tom

Don't let that smoke out!
