Re: Bonnie Raitt
If it's one of JB's ODS it could be just about anything, with the relationship with HAD it could qualify for most modified status till someone's been inside to verify, could have been modded and changed back and who knows what else.
What's the story with the naming of the MANSAMP? Seems like Bonnie had the first (and only?) of these, interesting being a woman and all...

Re: Bonnie Raitt
Tony, you did probably misunderstand what was written up in Premier Guitar:talbany wrote:Bonnie's also been known to lug around ODSR #60..Another one of JB's Dumbles..Recently written up in Premiere Guitar!!
"Another thing we discovered was that the combo cabinet and chassis were not necessarily intended to be used together. The story goes that the purple suede-covered 1x12 cabinet, complete with EVM-12L speaker and oval ported back panel, was offered to Bonnie Raitt to be used as a combo (with a head/chassis which is unknown to us) but was rejected as being too heavy. It then resided beside Mr. Dumble’s workbench serving as a coffee table of sorts until it was sold to Greg Bayles in 1989 (former owner of Make’n Music in Chicago) where it was mated with the OD-100WR chassis and sold to its current owner."

AFAIK most of the transition generation ODS amps with an accent switch have originally been built with a low plate classic configuration, just like #093 e.g.. But Alexander Dumble often updated his amps at some later point in time. So based on the "look" or exterior design "generation" of a Dumble ODS amps you can only deduct the more general specs of the circuit it was originally built with, but not the actual circuit at some later point in time. So, no, I don't know what kind of circuit this amp had when these pictures have been taken.CHIP wrote:Do you know if Bonnie's amp is low plate classic or high plate classic?
Greg, I don’t think that this makes sense because the 3rd generation ODS amps have a circuit that’s very different from the circuit of the transition generation ODS amps like the one that is the topic of this thread.boldaslove6789 wrote:Then we'll call it a 3rd gen Transitional era "Classic"
The 3rd generation ODS amps have a circuit with the pre-classic tone stack, the funky OD entrance, no snubbers and no ratio control etc. that’s very similar to the circuit of a 2nd generation ODS amp: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=12871
But the transition generation ODS amps have the circuit of the 4th generation ODS amps with the classic tone stack, the trigger OD entrance, snubbers and a ratio control etc. The only exception is that some of the transition generation amps, like the one that is the topic of this thread, still have an accent switch and no presence control.
IMO "transition generation ODS" is an appropriate name for these amps, because their general circuit specs are already those of the 4th generation ODS amps with a classic tone stack, a trigger OD entrance, snubbers, a ratio control, and (most but not all) with a presence control, but they still look similar (some more, some less) to a 3rd generation ODS amp, especially the transition generation amps with a silver chassis, like #0075 of Steve Farris e.g., or the one I post a picture of here.
So IMO we should just continue to call a 3rd generation ODS a 3rd generation ODS, a transition generation ODS a transition generation ODS, and a 4th generation ODS a 4th generation ODS.
Cheers,
Max

AFAIK Bonnie had the purple combo cabinet built and played the amp for a short period then decided it was to heavy to lug around..

TonyI have a couple of significant Dumbles for sale. Jackson Browne's Skyline modified ODR #0060 (in Bonnie Raiit's purple suede combo cab), and el34 "Bluesmaster" Skyline #0204. The ODR was purchased from Browne by Greg Bayles at Maken' Music, then went to me in 1995. Greg ordered #0204, and sold it to me when it came in, 1997-98. It has never left my studio.

Re: Bonnie Raitt
Tony, AFAIK she never owned or used ODR #060. The purple cabinet, that's now the one of #060, was the one her own ODR (# unknown to me) was mounted in when she visited Alexander Dumble to pick up her own ODR. But because this (her own and custom built for her!) ODR combo was too heavy for her taste, her ODR was then mounted in a head cabinet. So this purple combo cabinet stayed empty in Alexander Dumble's shop for years until Greg Bayles bought it and fitted the chassis of JB's ODR #060, that JB had used in a head cabinet, into this empty purple combo cabinet. So the #060 amp chassis in this purple combo cabinet is JB's ODR, that (AFAIK) Bonnie Raitt never owned or used.talbany wrote:AFAIK Bonnie had the purple combo cabinet built and played the amp for a hort period then decided it was to heavy to lug around..

Thanks for the clarification on that..I remember reading somewhere that she used the combo for a spell.. But your word trumps all that..

While I have you here.. Here is a kind of personal question..
What is your favorite Dumble Style amp.. Not a specific amp BUT!! a specific Dumble Topology? (Deserted Island Amp)..SSS Dumbleand etc..
Also Which Dumble amp would U put at the bottom of the list If you had to choose..(Have you ever met a Dumble amp U didn't like?)
Last but not least if you had to choose between a High plate or a Low plate say a transition generation amp..Which would you choose and why?..once again ..If you had to.
A curious mind wants to know!!!
Thanks in advance..

To add to Tony's request, especially with regard to the "you're stranded on a desert island, one Dumble *and* one guitar," let us know what guitar you'd take with the amp.talbany wrote:Max

Just want to know if there was a particular amp and guitar combo that you loved more than any else.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood.
Re: Bonnie Raitt
lol, like the amp was the end in sight, regardless of the band makeup, studio cut, or type of music, or type of guitar, or guitar Player !

As you all know personal taste changes with time. For now this is my answer:LeftyStrat wrote:To add to Tony's request, especially with regard to the "you're stranded on a desert island, one Dumble *and* one guitar," let us know what guitar you'd take with the amp.
1. If weight and portability doesn’t matter and if I would have mastered the electric guitar in the sense to be free to do with this instrument whatever I want, I think that the 11-filter-positions Dumbleland Special 150W I’ve posted a clip of in the reference thread would be my dream amp. I’m aware that I personally need the overdrive sounds only to mask that I’m no gifted guitar player. If I should ever be able to leave overdrive behind me, this Dumbleland Special 150W would be my #1 dream amp.
2. As long as I still need an overdrive channel to be happy with my playing and sound and if I really should have to chose one single ODS from all I know, there would be three amps I know that more or less all could do what I want: a 1st generation ODS 50W, a 2nd generation ODS 50W and a transition generation ODS 100W with a "low plate classic" configuration. So which one of these three ODS amps I would take with me on the island would depend on my spontaneous mood at the time when I would have to make this decision.
3. Personally I’m no big fan of the 5th generation skyline ODS amps, and so it’s perhaps no big surprise that one of these ODS amps was the one that I liked least of all Dumble amps I know. The sound of this one was too much "designed" for my personal taste, I don’t want a sound that’s similar to some woodwind or violin etc. I like if it’s still the obvious tone of an electric guitar what I achieve. So the more Dumbleland or SSS DNA I perceive in the tone of an ODS the better I like it. The OD channels of the later 5th and 6th generation ODS amps I played did sound a bit too artificial for my personal taste: "they'll get away from you and take you with 'em." (SRV).
Guitar to go with the three Dumble amps (see above):
If on the island there’s a shop where I can buy batteries, I would take an (IMO) awesome sounding and IMO unbelievable versatile Turner Model 1 with a piezo-bridge I know.
If there’s no possibility to buy batteries on this island, I would take a ’74 Stratocaster with a maple neck and an ash body I know that has a very articulate and clear and a bit "polished" tone, so without being shrill or sharp, and it's fat too, even in the higher registers, and it has tons of sustain - my dream guitar without batteries.
But please keep in mind that my personal taste concerning the sound of a guitar and an amp might be rather ununsual: I like the strat tones that RF achieved with #102 when it was still a "classic" in his Miles Davis days way better than his nineties Blue Line tones as an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQsayvE6_Pc the guitar solo starts around 3:50.
Cheers,
Max
Re: Bonnie Raitt
Max-
You and I are really birds of a feather!
My main guitar is a '77 hard-tail maple/ash strat that was my grandfathers that shares those qualities, my amp I'm building right now is a mishmash of early stuff, kind of a hybrid of second gen/classic transition, with values taken from #13 ODR to try and get some of that dumbleland quality with a 100 watt 6ca7 and precision power supply for what I'm hoping will provide "silky clean headroom".
Now I need to check out a Turner guitar, I used to work at EMG with Rob Turner back in the early 80's, and have some good friends that have worked at Alembic so I'm partial to all that hippy technology. I keep thinking about putting a tele pickup and stratoblaster in my strat for some of that Lowell George/alligator vibe. In the past I've overlooked the Turners because I'm not much of a Lindsey Buckingham fan, but I'll have to take a closer look.

Thanks for the personal response regarding your specific tastes as it pertains to a specific Dumble amplifier.. You seem to have such a fond favoritism on all Dumbles amps it's refreshing to see you point out a particular type model you personally have a connection with and explain why and some you feel not so connected with because for me this is a big part of amp building..Choosing the right build for your particular taste..
I personally love those amps that are clean transparent (like in the RF Miles clip) that have all the sustain compression sing of an overdrive amp has but stay clean.. Dumble has surely mastered this sound for me..I may just have to build me one of these SSS amps!!
All The Best!!

The #60 is heavily modified... Three boards. Preamp, Reverb, PI...
Neatest thing IMHO?
Reverb is POST preamp!
