NO
Do not work inside amp with it plugged in.
For both of my D-style amps the caps drain when powered down. You can actually hear them drain if you strum a chord right after turning power off.
In any case, I always unplug amp before getting inside chassis, and I always double check that the power was actually drained by placing Neg meter lead to ground and Pos meter lead to the positive lead on the large caps set to Dc.

Re: Dumble Clone issues
You can go to harbor freight and get a multimeter for under 5 bucks to measure the DC voltage on the large power supply caps. You don't need an expensive Fluke meter (but they're nice!).
I agree with CHIP. If you bought it as a D-style amp from a builder, it'd make sense to take it back to them for a quick check.I think you should contact the original builder and discuss these issues with him, before you go messin around inside that amp.

After fighting with the 14b Switchcraft jack I used on the FET input I said screw it and ordered the Kobiconn jack.
The shorting leafs on the Switchcraft never worked right and after bending them and tweaking them I gave up.
It works so much better it isn't funny.
I found out after I ordered it that they have changed the design somewhat.
It still works but I was told that there is another jack that is closer to the original and higher quality.
It's the Calrad 30-385

I never ordered it as the Kobi jack I have works well enough for me.

Re: Dumble Clone issues
Tom, I used the Calrad 30-385 in both my high voltage and hybrid 70's builds because I can get them locally and thought I would give them a try. It does have both open and closed circuits, but as far build quality I haven't recognized any tangible difference really. Thus, for the last few builds I've used the Kobiconn.Structo wrote:After fighting with the 14b Switchcraft jack I used on the FET input I said screw it and ordered the Kobiconn jack.

Well, I bent the shunts back on both so they touch the longer pin when nothing is plugged in but I'm still getting nothing via that input. The seller (not the builder) said everything worked fine when he shipped it.
I'll find out where the builder lives and maybe ship it back.

Can we see more pics? I have a hunch as to why the PAB doesn't work as well.dankayaker wrote:Well, I bent the shunts back on both so they touch the longer pin when nothing is plugged in but I'm still getting nothing via that input. Re: Dumble Clone issues
I bought a 183 clone not too long ago. The PAB and J/R switches did not work correctly. It turned out the switches and relays were simply not wired correctly. I think it can be a little confusing. Check out the layout diagrams. I believe the layouts are all a little different, but pick one and make sure you understand how the switching and relays work. Then trace it out and verify it is absolutely wired the right way.

Reduce the resolution and take a shot looking toward the front of the amp, the 3 mini switches that I want to see, pan out some.

Yep, just as I suspected, the PAB relay is wired wrong. A commonly made mistake is that your particular relay board is assumed to be the exact same type that's found in the layouts here.dankayaker wrote:Towards front of amp:ToneMerc wrote:Reduce the resolution and take a shot looking toward the front of the amp, the 3 mini switches that I want to see, pan out some.

If you could compare that relay to the type like HAD used, you would find that the connection points don't line up one for one.
