Bob,
Didja really feel that the 150k/2.7k sounded better than the 2.2k that would be the standard cathode resistor value?

You know, I keep screwing that up.dogears wrote:Bob,

Done, very subtle but I believe it's a little less buzzy now.

Finally I had a chance to listen to the clips. Nice clean tone. On the full overdrive I thought it was quite brutal, at least more so than my modded amps. I guess most of it is the 270pf snubbers. I never went as low as that except when I first modified my Concert (I forgot to put in snubbers - man, was that crazy and mean
!).

Bob
Wow! That is some nasty little mutha!
You know, you might help me out with something. I built a Princeton a few months ago and never have been really happy with it. I made mine from scratch and have got a Hammond 15 watt (125ese) OT and a 272dx for the PT.
What kind of iron are you using? Surely not the stock Fender units? Have I missed a thread or is this the first time you've written about this little beast? Relays being new to me, I need to do some reading on them, too. What is the purpose, in this instance?
Great job!
Dave

Iron....I'm using Fender replacement xformers from AES, I'm not sure who makes them but I've used several of these and I'm happy with all of them. In this case they had a pair with bent bell covers so I got them cheep.titanicslim wrote:Bob

Relays... Check on the schematic, you'll see that one is for channel switching and the other is for "PAB" preamp boost which disables the tone stack.

And your drive/ratio pots are log/lin?

But do you mean they are the repl. for the Princeton?

No, actually Deluxe.titanicslim wrote:Cheap is beautiful![]()

The drive and ratio pots are Audio taper.

Ah, that was my suspicion. I originally got these Hammonds because they were so close to the Deluxe.Bob-I wrote:No, actually Deluxe.titanicslim wrote:Cheap is beautiful![]()

Again, that is a sweet job!
Thanks a truckload,

Bob, you never cease to amaze me. While some of us spend a fortune chasing Dumble tone, you manage to get great tone on the cheap. (I was shocked to find that I spent well over $700 on my 6V6/5AR4 experiment.
)
I've still got a 100W ODS and a Komet 60 to finish up, but my next project is going to be "killer Dumble tone for $300 or less!"

Yes, Cheep is the word. My Peavey for $42 with another $100 in parts sounds great, this one at maybe $300 sounds great. So cool.Normster wrote:Bob, you never cease to amaze me. Are you happy with the relays? I found the same type on mouser, and am about to order some. I'm going for the unused 5V supply on my transformer, just like you did it..
Also, is one side of the relay coils grounded in your scheme, so that I can use the foot switch schem as shown in the attached picture (except from the different power supply)?

Re: Finally, pics of my Princeton/Hybrid... Clip added
Lots of questions now...but:
When I compare the schematic and the layout, there seems to be something different in the relay circuit.
On the schematic, the two 5V secondaries are conneted to one point at the bridge each. Then a third point from the bridge goes to the 5V regulator.
But on the layout, all four lugs on the brigde seems to be used so I'm having a hard time figuring out how to do this...
I'm also wondering if I can wire my footswitch to ground/de-ground the relay coils, or if they need to be isolated from ground.

Tommy, the rectifier circuit you show is a voltage doubler, which is probably not a good choice if you're using the 5V taps on your tranny. Better to use a bridge rectifier as Bob has done, or maybe use the one that Steve Ahola published a few years ago.

Re: Finally, pics of my Princeton/Hybrid... Clip added
It appears that you've drawn a voltage doubler supply, that's not necessary in this case. I used a bridge rectifier, a 1000uF/50V filter and a 7805 regulator. It works perfectly with these relays. No there's no ground, I simply used a stereo jack for the footswitch, connect the sleeve to the neutral of the relay supply, then the ring and tip to the relay coils.Tdale wrote:Are you happy with the relays?
